Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Belonging to the Tyrannidae family, this small passerine bird is characterized by its understated and subtle plumage, measuring approximately 13 to 14 centimeters in total length. The upperparts are mostly grayish-brown with olive undertones, contrasted by a pale gray throat and breast that gradually blends into a pale yellow abdomen. The head features a slightly rounded crown that can be raised into a small, subtle crest, complemented by a thin, indistinct whitish supercilium. Its bill is short, dark, and sturdy, with a marginally lighter coloration at the base of the lower mandible. The wings are adorned with two distinct whitish or buffy wing-bars formed by the tips of the wing coverts.

Geographical distribution: This highly migratory species exhibits an extensive range across South America, functioning as a long-distance austral migrant. During the breeding season, it is found throughout central and northern Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, and southern Brazil. With the onset of the austral winter, southern populations migrate northward to overwinter in the Amazon Basin, extending into eastern Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, and the Guianas.

Habitat: It primarily frequents semi-open, arid to semi-arid wooded habitats, including the Gran Chaco region, deciduous scrub forests, dry woodlands, savannas, and degraded secondary growth. It actively avoids dense, continuous humid rainforest interiors, showing a marked preference for transitional forest edges, shrubby pastures, and coastal restinga vegetation, spanning from sea level up to elevations of 1000 meters.

Feeding: The diet is predominantly insectivorous, supplemented by small fruits depending on seasonal availability. It preys on a wide variety of invertebrates, including beetles, ants, caterpillars, and small dipterans. Foraging techniques consist of sally-gleaning and sally-pouncing, snatching insects from the outer foliage or bark of mid-level tree branches. During the non-breeding season, small berries become a crucial component of its nutritional intake.

Behavior: Typically encountered alone or in pairs, this inconspicuous bird remains quiet and relatively difficult to spot amidst dense foliage. It tends to perch upright on exposed, low to mid-level branches while scanning for prey. Its presence is most easily detected by its vocalizations, which consist of a soft, melancholy, rising whistle often represented as a gentle "pree-e-e" or a sequence of thin, buzzy notes uttered at regular intervals.

Nesting: Breeding occurs during the spring and summer of the Southern Hemisphere. The species constructs a tiny, cup-shaped nest meticulously woven from fine plant fibers, twigs, lichens, and spiderwebs, which is securely anchored in a branch fork between 1 and 3 meters above the ground. The female typically lays a clutch of 2 to 3 creamy-white eggs speckled with reddish-brown and lilac spots near the larger end. Incubation lasts approximately 14 to 15 days, with both parents participating in feeding and protecting the nestlings.

Conservation status: On the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, this taxon is currently assessed as Least Concern (LC). This classification is supported by its extremely large geographical range and a population size that is believed to be stable, with no evidence of significant declines or immediate anthropogenic threats that could jeopardize its survival.
