Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Exhibits a slender body structure measuring approximately 13 to 14 centimeters in length and weighing between 10 and 16 grams. The upperparts of this small passerine are mostly a soft olive-green, which contrasts with the whitish underparts that show clean yellowish washes along the flanks. The crown is a contrasting slate-grey, bordered by dark, almost blackish lateral stripes that highlight a bold white-to-greyish supercilium. Its most diagnostic feature in adulthood is the bright red iris, which is bordered by a dark transocular eyeline, though younger birds possess a duller brownish or reddish-brown iris. The bill is strong, medium-sized, and dark grey with a small terminal hook, while the legs and feet are a clean bluish-grey.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across most of South America, stretching from the northern reaches of Colombia, Venezuela, and the Guianas, southward through the immense Amazon basin of Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, all the way to Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. It is a highly migratory species in the southern parts of its range, where populations breeding in temperate latitudes migrate northward to winter in the warmer Amazon basin during the austral winter, whereas northern populations are predominantly sedentary year-round residents.

Habitat: Colonizes a diverse array of wooded ecosystems, demonstrating high ecological flexibility. It is frequently observed in the canopy and sub-canopy of lowland evergreen forests, gallery forests, deciduous and semi-deciduous woodlands, as well as docs, xerophytic scrublands, forest edges, and secondary growth areas. Additionally, this bird readily adapts to human-altered environments, establishing territories in shade-coffee plantations, rural gardens, urban parks with mature trees, and orchards, provided there is sufficient high foliage cover.

Feeding: Maintains an omnivorous diet that fluctuates depending on seasonal availability and physiological demands. During the breeding season, it targets a vast array of invertebrates, focusing heavily on lepidopteran caterpillars, beetles, flies, spiders, and small wasps, which it gleans from the undersides of leaves. Conversely, during migration and the non-breeding season, it shifts its diet significantly to incorporate small fruits and berries, making it an efficient seed disperser within its migratory corridors.

Behavior: Spends most of its time high in the arboreal canopy, rarely descending to the ground, moving with deliberate yet active movements while searching for prey among the leaves. The male is renowned for its persistent, monotonous song, consisting of short, repeated phrases that sound like a continuous query, uttered throughout the day even during the hottest hours of the afternoon. Outside the breeding cycle, it becomes quieter and frequently joins mixed-species foraging flocks alongside other insectivorous forest birds.

Nesting: Constructs a neat, cup-shaped nest suspended by its rim from the horizontal fork of a thin branch, typically placed at heights ranging from 2 to 10 meters above the forest floor. The nest is meticulously woven using fine bark strips, dry leaves, grass fibers, mosses, and bound securely with large amounts of spider silk, which provides both structure and flexibility. The female typically lays a clutch of 2 to 4 white eggs speckled with fine dark brown or reddish dots concentrated at the larger end, which she incubates for about 12 to 14 days before the altricial chicks hatch.

Conservation status: Classified globally as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This status is justified by its exceptionally vast geographic distribution and its ability to tolerate moderate levels of forest fragmentation, finding suitable ecological niches in mature secondary forests, agricultural landscapes, and urban green spaces.
