Description


Characterized by a small, compact body measuring approximately 11 to 12 centimeters in length and weighing between 8 and 10 grams. The plumage is predominantly dark sooty-gray on the upperparts, transitioning to a slightly paler, ash-gray on the underparts. The crown is marginally darker, nearly blackish, and conceals a small white patch that is typically hidden unless revealed during courtship or territorial displays. The wings and tail are blackish-brown with narrow, indistinct grayish margins on the wing coverts. The bill is short, straight, and completely black, matching the slender legs, while the iris is a deep dark brown. There is no apparent sexual dimorphism, meaning males and females are visually identical in both coloration and size.

Geographical distribution: Found throughout the southern cone of South America. Its geographical range spans southeastern and southern Brazil (ranging from Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro south to Rio Grande do Sul), across the entire territory of Uruguay, eastern and central Paraguay, and extensive regions of Argentina, where its distribution extends southwards into northern Patagonia including the provinces of Neuquén and Río Negro.

Habitat: Shows a strict and highly specialized association with freshwater aquatic systems. It is almost exclusively restricted to rocky rivers, fast-flowing mountain streams, and gravelly riverbanks with emergent rocks and dense riparian vegetation. It is exceptionally rare to observe this species far from flowing water, as it relies heavily on healthy riparian corridors featuring overhanging shrubs and trees, particularly those adjacent to clean, clear-running waters.

Feeding: Primarily an insectivorous specialist. Its diet consists of small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, with a strong preference for dipterans, ephemeropterans, small beetles, and other flying insects. Foraging techniques include short aerial sallies over the water´s surface to snatch prey in mid-air, as well as gleaning insects directly from wet rocks, pebbles, and riverside foliage.

Behavior: Displaying highly active and territorial traits, this species is typically seen in pairs that remain together year-round within established linear territories along rivers. A diagnostic behavioral characteristic is its frequent tail-wagging, where it continuously pumps its tail vertically while perched on rocks or low-hanging branches near the water. The vocalization consists of sharp, metallic, rhythmic chips, often performed as a coordinated duet between mates to signal territory ownership.

Nesting: Breeding activity occurs mainly between September and January. The nest is a neat, sturdy cup constructed from mosses, fine rootlets, plant fibers, and cobwebs, lined internally with soft feathers. This structure is strategically positioned at low heights, usually under two meters above the water, nestled in the fork of a branch overhanging the current or wedged into rocky crevices on the riverbanks. The female typically lays a clutch of 2 to 3 creamy-white eggs, which are incubated for about 14 to 15 days. Both parents actively participate in feeding and protecting the nestlings.

Conservation status: Categorized as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its global population appears stable, local populations face threats from river canalization, dam construction which destroys riverine rapids, pollution of freshwater systems, and the loss of native riparian vegetation.
