Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Is a large-bodied galliform bird measuring between 65 and 75 centimeters in total length and weighing approximately 1.2 to 1.4 kilograms. The plumage is predominantly dark olive-brown to blackish, characterized by distinctive white streaking on the neck, breast, and upper mantle, which is formed by the pale margins of the feathers. A highly conspicuous, bare red dewlap of skin hangs from the throat, expanding noticeably during vocalizations. The bare orbital skin is dark slate-gray, surrounding a reddish-brown iris. The lower limbs, which give this taxon its common name, are a diagnostic dark gray to black, distinguishing it from related members of the genus Penelope. The bill is robust, slightly curved, and blackish in coloration.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the southern cone of South America, encompassing southeastern Brazil (ranging from Bahia and Minas Gerais southward to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, extreme northwestern Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina (principally in the provinces of Misiones, Corrientes, Entre Ríos, Chaco, and Formosa, following the gallery forests of the Paraná and Uruguay rivers down to the Paraná Delta in Buenos Aires). Two distinct subspecies are recognized: Penelope obscura obscura in the southern part of the range, and Penelope obscura bronzina in the northern region.

Habitat: Inhabits mainly humid subtropical and temperate forests, gallery forests, montane cloud forests (yungas), and secondary growth woodlands. Its elevational range spans from sea level up to 2,200 meters in the Brazilian highlands. It is highly dependent on continuous forest canopy for its movement, but demonstrates moderate tolerance to habitat fragmentation, provided there are functional ecological corridors. Increasingly, it is adapting to mature urban parks, botanical gardens, and suburban agricultural interfaces with adjacent forest patches.

Feeding: Is predominantly frugivorous, acting as a vital ecological agent for seed dispersal of numerous native tree species, particularly palms such as Euterpe edulis and Syagrus romanzoffiana. Its diet is seasonally supplemented with tender leaves, flowers, buds, seeds, and occasionally small invertebrates like insects and terrestrial snails. Foraging occurs primarily within the middle and upper strata of the forest canopy, though individuals regularly descend to the forest floor to consume fallen fruits.

Behavior: Exhibits mostly arboreal and crepuscular habits, displaying peak activity during early morning and late afternoon. Movement through the canopy consists of agile hops and short, silent glides, avoiding sustained flights across open spaces. It is typically encountered in pairs or small family groups of up to six individuals. The species is known for its loud, raucous vocalizations, emitting harsh alarm calls that echo through the forest. During the breeding season, males perform a characteristic wing-drumming display during short flights to declare and defend territories.

Nesting: Constructs its nest in tree forks or dense tangles of lianas and epiphytes, typically situated at heights of 2 to 5 meters above the ground. The nest is a bulky, shallow platform made of dry twigs, leaves, and stems, well-concealed within dense foliage. A standard clutch consists of 2 to 3 large white eggs with a rough texture. Incubation is performed solely by the female and lasts roughly 28 days. The precocial chicks hatch covered in cryptic down, allowing them to leave the nest shortly after hatching to follow their parents into the safety of the upper canopy.

Conservation status: On a global scale, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) categorizes this species as Least Concern (LC) due to its extensive geographical distribution. However, local populations face severe pressure from habitat loss and fragmentation driven by agricultural expansion and real estate development. Additionally, illegal hunting remains a persistent threat across its range, as the species is targeted for its meat, leading to localized extinctions in unprotected forest fragments.
