Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Is a small, distinctive passerine bird belonging to the ovenbird family, Furnariidae, measuring approximately 14 to 16 centimeters in length and weighing between 13 and 17 grams. It is characterized by its bright rufous-cinnamon upperparts, which cover the crown, back, wings, and tail in a uniform, warm tone. In contrast, the underparts are mostly whitish, creating a sharp demarcation along the sides of the neck. The species derives its English name from a small, bright yellow patch located on its chin, which can be difficult to observe unless the bird is viewed closely or seen singing with its throat feathers raised. It features a pale, indistinct grayish supercilium and a darker eye-stripe. The bill is straight, pointed, and dark gray, while the legs are sturdy and greenish-gray. Its tail feathers are graduated and end in slightly stiffened, pointed tips, which is a common physical trait within its family.

Geographical distribution: This bird is widely distributed across much of South America, east of the Andes. Its range extends from northern Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad, and the Guianas, southward through central and eastern Brazil, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and into northern and central Argentina, reaching as far south as the northeastern Buenos Aires province. It is particularly common along major river basins, including the Amazon, Orinoco, and Paraná-Plata systems, where suitable aquatic habitats are abundant.

Habitat: Strictly associated with wetlands and aquatic environments. It is commonly found in freshwater marshes, swamps, flooded pastures, lake margins, wet ditches, and slow-moving rivers with dense emergent vegetation such as cattails, reeds, and rushes. It also occurs in mangrove edges and brackish lagoons. The species avoids closed-canopy forests and high-altitude mountain regions, preferring open or semi-open lowland landscapes where dense, low-growing vegetation meets shallow water.

Feeding: Primarily insectivorous, its diet consists of a wide variety of small invertebrates. It feeds on beetles, spiders, caterpillars, ants, small flies, and other aquatic or terrestrial insects found within its marshy habitat. It forages actively by hopping through low vegetation, meticulously gleaning prey from the surfaces of leaves, reed stems, and floating vegetation, often using its sharp bill to probe into small crevices and leaf axils.

Behavior: It is a highly active, noisy, and conspicuous bird, typically seen in pairs that remain close to one another. They forage low in the vegetation and are rarely seen high in trees or on the open ground far from cover. Their vocalization is a loud, rapid, metallic rattling trill, often delivered as a coordinated duet by a mated pair. During this performance, both birds frequently vibrate or flutter their wings in a highly characteristic display. They are weak fliers, preferring short, jerky flights from one reed clump to another.

Nesting: Constructs a remarkably large, bulky, and elaborate nest made of thorny twigs and branches. This spherical or retort-shaped structure is typically placed low over the water, securely anchored to shrubs or sturdy emergent vegetation. The nest features a long, curved entrance tunnel that leads to a central nesting chamber, which is lined with soft grass, moss, and rootlets. The female lays 3 to 4 greenish-white or pale cream eggs. Both parents share the duties of nest construction, incubation, and feeding the nestlings.

Conservation status: Currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The species has an extremely large geographic range, and its population is believed to be stable, with no evidence of significant declines or widespread threats. However, local populations can be vulnerable to the drainage, pollution, and conversion of wetlands for agricultural or urban development.
