Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Description: It is a distinctive bird easily recognized by its prominent erectile crest, long graduated tail, and active, noisy behavior. It possesses a robust body, long tail, and characteristic posture that creates an elongated silhouette, traits typical of ovenbirds adapted to life among shrubs and open woodlands. Its plumage is predominantly chestnut-brown, with slightly richer tones on the wings and tail, while the throat is generally paler and contrasts subtly with the rest of the body. The bill is relatively strong and slightly curved, well suited for handling a variety of food items. Its most remarkable feature is the crest formed by elongated feathers that can be raised when the bird is alert or engaged in social interactions. Males and females are very similar in appearance, showing little visible sexual dimorphism. These characteristics make Pseudoseisura lophotes one of the most recognizable birds inhabiting the dry landscapes of central and northern Argentina.

Geographic distribution: Its distribution is centered primarily in central and northern Argentina, particularly within the Chaco and Espinal regions. Local populations may also occur near the borders of neighboring countries, although Argentina contains the majority of the species´ range. Within suitable habitats it is often widespread and conspicuous due to its vocal behavior and the visibility of its large nests. The species is generally resident throughout the year, performing only short-distance movements associated with local environmental conditions and food availability.

Habitat: It inhabits dry forests, Chaco woodlands, thorn scrub, wooded savannas, shrublands, and open areas with scattered trees. The species demonstrates considerable adaptability and is frequently observed in ranchlands, rural settlements, roadside vegetation, parks, and gardens. It prefers environments that provide trees and shrubs suitable for shelter, feeding, and nest construction. Although commonly associated with relatively dry regions, it may also occur near watercourses when adequate vegetation cover is available.

Diet: Its diet is primarily insectivorous and opportunistic, consisting largely of a wide variety of arthropods. Common prey include beetles, ants, caterpillars, spiders, grasshoppers, and other small invertebrates. Seeds, fruits, and various plant materials are also consumed when available. Individuals forage both in vegetation and on the ground, carefully inspecting branches, trunks, and foliage. This dietary flexibility allows the species to exploit seasonal resources and adapt to fluctuating environmental conditions.

Behavior: It is a highly vocal, active, and social species, frequently observed in pairs or small family groups. Its loud and repetitive calls play an important role in communication and territorial defense. Pair bonds are often long-lasting, and both adults cooperate in nest construction and chick rearing. The species moves actively among shrubs and trees through short flights and agile movements. Its curious and territorial nature makes it quick to respond to disturbances or intruders within its home range.

Breeding: It constructs one of the most remarkable nests among South American birds. The structure consists of a massive bundle of intertwined thorny sticks that may reach impressive dimensions and remain visible for years. Inside are protected chambers connected by access tunnels that provide security from predators and harsh weather. Nests are usually placed in trees, large shrubs, fence posts, or even artificial structures. Both members of the pair participate actively in construction and maintenance. The clutch typically contains several white eggs, and both parents share incubation and chick-rearing duties.

Conservation status: The species is classified as Least Concern (LC) because of its broad distribution and generally stable populations. Its ability to utilize partially modified habitats has contributed to its persistence across much of its range. Nevertheless, habitat fragmentation, native forest loss, and vegetation degradation may affect some local populations. The conservation of Chaco ecosystems and other native habitats remains important for ensuring the species’ long-term survival.
