Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This small passerine bird, belonging to the family Vireonidae, is characterized by its slender profile and subtle coloration. It measures between 11 and 12.5 centimeters (approximately 4.3 to 4.9 inches) in length and weighs around 8 to 10 grams. The most diagnostic feature of this taxon is its prominent rufous or reddish-brown crown, which contrasts sharply with its uniform olive-green mantle and back. The sides of the head, including the auricular region and cheeks, exhibit a pale ash-grey color delicately streaked with white. Its underparts fade into a pale yellow or greenish-yellow on the flanks and breast, becoming cleaner and whitish towards the center of the abdomen. The eyes feature a dark brown iris, the bill is slender with a dark grey upper mandible and a flesh-colored lower mandible, and the legs are a light bluish-grey. No significant sexual dimorphism is present in Hylophilus poicilotis, as adult males and females look virtually identical.

Geographical distribution: The species is native to the southeastern regions of South America, primarily restricted to the Atlantic Forest biome. Its range encompasses southeastern Brazil (from southern Bahia and Minas Gerais, south through Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, and Santa Catarina, reaching Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, and the far northeastern Argentina, particularly within the province of Misiones.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits the understory, subcanopy, and canopy of humid subtropical and temperate forests, mature secondary forests, woodland borders, and coastal scrub known as restinga. While it shows a preference for well-preserved primary forests, it can adapt to degraded or regenerating forest patches. It spans an elevational range from sea level up to approximately 1400 meters in montane areas of its distribution.

Feeding: Its diet is predominantly insectivorous, supplemented by small fleshy fruits and berries. It actively forages within the dense foliage of the canopy and subcanopy, searching for caterpillars, small beetles, flies, spiders, and other small arthropods. It employs gleaning and short sallying techniques to pluck prey from the undersides of leaves, showing remarkable agility as it hops through thin branches and foliage clusters.

Behavior: It is a highly active and energetic bird that is rarely seen sitting still. Although it typically travels singly or in pairs, it regularly joins mixed-species flocks moving through the forest canopy alongside other small insectivorous birds. It has a distinctive, repetitive vocalization consisting of a fast, high-pitched series of whistling notes that sound like a rhythmic "pree-pree-pree-pree," which it uses to defend its territory and maintain contact with its mate.

Nesting: Breeding occurs during the spring and early summer of the Southern Hemisphere. It constructs a deep, cup-shaped nest suspended from a horizontal fork of a thin branch, typically positioned high off the ground in the forest´s midstory or canopy. The nest is woven from fine plant fibers, moss, lichens, and spiderwebs, which act as a binder to secure and stabilize the structure. The female lays 2 to 3 white eggs speckled with reddish-brown spots concentrated at the larger end. Both parents participate in incubating the eggs and caring for the altricial nestlings.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its populations are considered stable and it occurs in several national parks and reserves, the persistent fragmentation and loss of the Atlantic Forest due to logging, agriculture, and urban development remain long-term threats to the genetic connectivity of its populations.
