Description


Is a medium-sized passerine measuring between 23 and 27 centimeters in total length, displaying minor sexual dimorphism where males are slightly larger than females. This taxon is characterized by an entirely glossy black plumage without any yellow or red patches on the rump or wing coverts, which distinguishes it from most of its relatives. Its most striking physical feature is the strong, pointed, ivory-white or pale cream-colored bill that contrasts sharply with its dark body. The irises are a deep dark red to reddish-brown, giving the bird a highly piercing gaze. The legs and feet are robust, dark grey, and well-adapted for gripping branches in dense undergrowth.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across central and northern South America, with a range encompassing Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, as well as parts of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela. It is particularly common along the major river basins of the Paraná, Paraguay, and Amazon rivers, preferring lowland environments from sea level up to approximately 800 meters of elevation.

Habitat: Prefers gallery forests, riparian woodlands, swamps, wetlands, flooded savannas, and humid scrublands like those of the humid Chaco. It shows a persistent affinity for areas near water bodies, utilizing the lower and middle strata of dense vegetation, thickets, and climbing vines which offer excellent shelter and foraging sites.

Feeding: Has an omnivorous and opportunistic diet. It actively searches for invertebrates such as insects, caterpillars, spiders, and small snails, often extracting them from crevices in tree bark, rolled leaves, and epiphytic bromeliads. It also consumes wild fruits, berries, seeds, and occasionally nectar from various flowers, using its sharp bill to pry open buds or probe plant structures.

Behavior: Unlike many of its highly gregarious relatives, this bird is typically solitary or found in pairs, rarely joining large conspecific flocks, though it may occasionally associate with mixed-species feeding flocks. It is an extremely active and vocal bird, famous for its remarkable ability to mimic the vocalizations of other bird species and environmental sounds. Its complex acoustic repertoire consists of metallic notes, clear whistles, and harsh chattering, often delivered from hidden perches within the foliage.

Nesting: Constructs a solitary, highly elaborate, and pendulous nest shaped like a long woven bag or pouch, measuring between 40 and 60 centimeters in length. Woven exclusively by the female using flexible plant fibers, rootlets, vine tendrils, and dry grass, the nest is suspended from outer branches, often hanging directly over water or built in close proximity to active, aggressive wasp nests of the genus Polybia, which serves as a natural deterrent against tree-dwelling predators. The clutch usually consists of two to three eggs, which are bluish-white with dark brown or purplish speckles. Incubation is performed solely by the female, but both parents actively participate in feeding and protecting the chicks.

Conservation status: Is listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although some local populations face pressure from habitat fragmentation due to agricultural expansion and logging, its overall population remains stable across its vast distribution range, ensuring its conservation without immediate major threats.
