Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism and an exceptionally distinctive, patterned bill. This medium-sized ramphastid measures between 33 and 37 centimeters in total length and weighs approximately 140 to 170 grams. Males display a deep jet-black color on the head, throat, and breast, accented by a conspicuous, elongated golden-yellow tuft extending behind the eye. In contrast, females present a rich chestnut-brown coloration on the head and breast. Both sexes possess olive-green upperparts, bright red undertail coverts, and a bare orbital skin of an intense turquoise-green color. The most diagnostic feature is the heavy bill, which is greenish-gray or yellowish and marked with three to five vertical black bands on both mandibles.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a distribution range restricted primarily to the Atlantic Forest biome of South America. Its geographic range extends from the state of Bahia southward to Rio Grande do Sul in eastern Brazil, reaching westward into eastern Paraguay and the northeastern corner of Argentina, specifically within the Misiones province.

Habitat: Inhabits the mid-story and canopy of humid tropical and subtropical forests, as well as primary montane forests and mature secondary woodlands. It shows a strong preference for dense, well-preserved interior forest structures in the Atlantic Forest ecosystem, occurring from sea level up to elevations of 1,000 meters.

Feeding: Consumes a diet that is primarily frugivorous, relying heavily on the fruits of native palms (Euterpe edulis), wild figs (Ficus species), and various pioneer trees such as Cecropia. To meet its nutritional demands, it opportunistically supplements this plant matter with animal protein, preying upon insects, spiders, tree frogs, small lizards, and occasionally raiding other avian nests for eggs and nestlings.

Behavior: Forages quietly and is typically observed alone, in monogamous pairs, or in small family cohorts of up to four individuals. Unlike larger and more boisterous toucan species, it is remarkably stealthy and difficult to spot within the thick foliage. Its vocalization consists of low-pitched, rhythmic, frog-like croaks. Flight is short, undulating, and direct, designed to navigate the complex understory while avoiding detection by raptors.

Nesting: Breeds in natural tree cavities or occupies abandoned woodpecker holes located between 4 and 12 meters above the forest floor. The female lays a clutch of 2 to 4 white eggs. Both parents share incubation duties for approximately 16 days, and both actively participate in brooding and feeding the altricial chicks, which remain in the nest cavity for about 40 days before fledging.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species due to its moderate overall range size. However, its populations are experiencing an ongoing decline, driven mainly by severe habitat fragmentation and deforestation across its native biome, along with occasional pressure from the illegal wild bird trade.
