Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Is a highly secretive and slender bird characterized by its cryptic appearance and remarkable behavioral adaptations within the forest understory. Measuring approximately 27 to 30 centimeters in total length, this taxon features a predominantly dark brown to olive-brown dorsal plumage, which provides excellent camouflage against the leafy background of its environment. It displays a distinctive cinnamon-rufous crest on its crown, which can be raised when agitated or during courtship displays. The underparts are mostly buff-colored to pale ochraceous and lack the heavy streaking found in closely related species. Its graduated tail is remarkably long with white-tipped outer feathers, mimicking the structural appearance of a pheasant. The bill is fine, slightly decurved, and greyish in coloration, perfectly adapted for extracting prey from dense leaf litter.

Geographical distribution: Occurs broadly yet patchily throughout the Neotropical region in South America. Its geographic range encompasses northern Argentina (mainly in the Misiones province), eastern Paraguay, and extensive regions of Brazil, spanning both the Amazon basin and the Atlantic Forest biome. Additionally, it is recorded in forested sectors of Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, and the Guianas. Because of its extremely shy nature and tendency to remain hidden, actual physical sightings are rare, making the species difficult to detect without a deep knowledge of its vocalizations.

Habitat: Prefers the dense understory of humid tropical and subtropical forests, as well as gallery forests, mature secondary growth, and humid montane forests up to elevations of 1600 meters above sea level. It thrives in environments characterized by a closed canopy and a complex, tangled lower vegetation layer, where low light levels and dense foliage protect it from aerial predators and facilitate its stealthy hunting strategies.

Feeding: Relies on an insectivorous diet consisting of a wide variety of forest invertebrates. It actively searches for and consumes grasshoppers, crickets, caterpillars (including noxious, hairy varieties), beetles, and spiders. Occasionally, small lizards and other minuscule vertebrates may be taken when encountered. Its foraging technique involves sitting quietly on low perches, scanning the ground or nearby leaves, and then making sudden, agile sallies to seize prey from the ground or low-hanging branches.

Behavior: Displays solitary and highly elusive habits, rarely seen in the open and usually detected only by its distinctive vocalizations. Its song consists of a thin, melancholic series of high-pitched whistles, often a two- or three-note pattern that carries well through the dense forest undergrowth. When moving through its territory, it performs short, low flights and is known to cock and fan its long tail, presenting a peacock-like display on a miniature scale, a behavior that inspired its specific scientific name.

Nesting: Exhibits a highly specialized reproductive strategy known as obligate brood parasitism, meaning it does not build a nest, incubate its own eggs, or raise its young. Instead, females clandestinely lay their eggs in the nests of smaller insectivorous passerines, primarily tyrant flycatchers of the family Tyrannidae, including genera such as Myiarchus, Todirostrum, and Mionectes. The cuckoo´s egg often mimics the color and patterning of the host´s eggs. Once hatched, the nestling typically evicts the host´s eggs or hatchlings from the nest, ensuring it receives undivided attention and all the food resources brought by the foster parents.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. However, because it is strictly dependent on intact forest ecosystems and healthy populations of host species, the ongoing fragmentation of tropical forests, logging, and agricultural expansion pose significant long-term threats to the stability of its populations across its range.
