Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is a medium-sized bird measuring approximately 19 to 21 centimeters in total length. It is instantly recognizable by its thick, heavy, and striking bright orange bill in adults, which contrasts sharply with its darker crown and head. A prominent white supercilium runs from above the eye back toward the nape of the neck. The throat is pristine white, sharply bordered below by a bold black breast-band or collar, which may be solid or broken in some subspecies. The upperparts are washed in deep slate grey to olive-green, while the underparts transition to a warm buffy-cinnamon color. The legs are dark greyish, and the irises are dark brown, completing its compact yet elegant profile.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed across the southern half of South America. Its geographic range encompasses northern and central Argentina extending down to northern Patagonia, western Uruguay, western and chacoan Paraguay, southern and central Bolivia, the extreme southern edge of Brazil (primarily in the state of Rio Grande do Sul), and dry inter-Andean valleys in Peru.

Habitat: This passerine prefers semi-open woodlots and scrubby ecosystems. It is highly associated with dry deciduous woodlands like the Chaco and Espinal, montane scrublands, agricultural fringes, domestic gardens, and riparian thickets. In the Andean slopes, it can be found occupying shrubby valleys at elevations reaching up to 3,000 meters above sea level.

Feeding: It is an opportunistic omnivore with a predominantly vegetarian diet. It feeds heavily on a wide variety of wild fruits, berries, seeds, flower buds, and fresh leaves. During the spring and summer breeding seasons, it supplements its diet by foraging for insects and other small invertebrates, which provide high-quality protein necessary for rearing offspring.

Behavior: Typically observed in pairs or small family units, this species is highly territorial during the nesting period. It is well known for its loud, melodious, and flute-like song, often delivered from a prominent, exposed perch on top of bushes or low trees. It is mostly a sedentary resident, although high-altitude Andean populations are known to undergo altitudinal migrations to lower valleys during the cold winter months.

Nesting: The breeding season takes place between spring and late summer. It constructs a bulky, open cup-shaped nest made of twigs, coarse grasses, leaves, and rootlets, which is usually well concealed within the thick foliage of thorny shrubs or low branches. The female typically lays a clutch of 2 to 3 pale blue-green eggs, heavily speckled or scribbled with dark brown or black markings near the larger end. Both parents cooperatively feed and protect the nestlings.

Conservation status: It is evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Due to its massive geographic range, high tolerance for human-altered habitats, and stable population trends, there are currently no major threats threatening its survival.
