Collared Forest Falcon

Belonging to a highly specialized lineage of forest-dwelling raptors, this species represents the largest member of its genus, with an overall length of 46 to 58 centimeters and a wingspan spanning 72 to 92 centimeters, with females being significantly heavier and larger than males. It exhibits an extraordinary polymorphic plumage variation, divided into three distinct phases: the pale morph, featuring dark brown to charcoal-black upperparts, a prominent white or buffy collar encircling the neck, and clean white to pale-buff underparts; the tawny morph, which displays rich ochre-orange tones on the chest and face; and the dark morph, which is almost entirely slate-black with faint tail banding. Its long, rounded tail is characterized by three to four narrow white bands. The facial structure is unique, showing bare skin around the eyes, with a vibrant yellow cere, lores, and legs, coupled with a specialized facial disc that aids in precise sound localization within the dense understory.

Geographical distribution: This raptor occupies a vast neotropical range, extending from central and southern Mexico through the entire Central American land bridge, and deep into South America. Its South American distribution encompasses territories east of the Andes, including Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and stretching to its southernmost limit in northern Argentina.

Habitat: It primarily populates the interior of pristine lowland tropical rainforests, deciduous forests, gallery woodlands, mature secondary growth, and occasionally coastal mangroves. While it shows a strict dependency on dense forest canopies, it can adapt to fragmented landscapes provided there are substantial corridors of mature forest left intact to secure foraging and breeding grounds.

Feeding: Operating as a highly stealthy, opportunistic apex predator, its diet consists of a wide array of forest vertebrates. It regularly preys upon birds (such as toucans, guans, doves, and parrots), small to medium-sized mammals (including squirrels, rodents, bats, and small opossums), and reptiles (lizards and snakes). It utilizes its exceptional acoustic sensitivity to pinpoint prey movements under thick leaf litter before executing a swift ambush from low-perched branches in the mid-canopy.

Behavior: Highly secretive and elusive, this bird is far more frequently heard than observed in the wild. It possesses a distinctive crepuscular activity pattern, calling actively during dawn and dusk with a deep, echoing, human-like bark. It is highly territorial, defending large areas of dense forest. When hunting, it is capable of running swiftly on the forest floor using its elongated legs, and it has been documented following army ant swarms to intercept fleeing insects and small vertebrates displaced by the ants.

Nesting: Breeding occurs in deep natural cavities of mature, large-diameter trees, often utilizing hollows created by wood decay or abandoned nests of large woodpeckers, situated 10 to 30 meters above the forest floor. No nesting material is added to the cavity. The female typically lays a clutch of two to three eggs, which are white with dense reddish-brown mottling. The incubation period lasts between 46 and 48 days and is performed almost exclusively by the female, while the male takes full responsibility for hunting and delivering food to the nest during incubation and early nestling stages.

Conservation status: It is currently assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, given its extensive distribution across the Americas. However, localized populations are under severe pressure and declining due to rapid deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and the logging of old-growth trees which limits the availability of nesting cavities.
