Description

Small gaucho measuring approximately 17–18.5 cm in length, noticeably smaller and more slender than other gauchos, with relatively long legs and predominantly terrestrial habits, and capable of resembling a ground tyrant (Muscisaxicola) in appearance and behavior. It has an overall brownish-gray coloration, with a grayish-brown head and upperparts. It shows a short and diffuse whitish eyebrow. The throat is whitish with dark streaks; the breast is grayish, while the flanks show ochre or cinnamon-brown tones, and the belly and undertail coverts are paler, whitish to pale cream. The wings are dark and show conspicuous whitish edges, forming two distinct wingbars. The tail is dark, with the outer feathers edged in white. The bill is relatively slender and dark, somewhat paler at the base, and the iris is dark brown. The sexes are similar. Juveniles show warmer tones and less well-defined streaking.

It may occur alongside other gauchos, particularly the Great Shrike-Tyrant (Agriornis micropterus), from which it differs in its smaller size, considerably thinner bill, more slender appearance, distinctly terrestrial behavior, and more conspicuous wingbars.

Geographic distribution: A breeding endemic of Argentina, where it reproduces from Catamarca, La Rioja, and Córdoba southward to southern Patagonia, particularly in Monte environments and Patagonian shrub-steppe. Southern populations are migratory and move northward during winter, reaching Bolivia, Paraguay, and much of central and northern Argentina, with occasional records in Uruguay and southern Brazil. There are also recent and sporadic records from Chile, mainly during migration and wintering. It occurs from sea level to approximately 2,500 m above sea level and may occasionally reach higher elevations.

Habitat: During the breeding season, it primarily inhabits arid and semi-arid shrub steppes, scrublands, Patagonian grasslands, and Monte environments of the Plains and Plateaus, with scattered shrubs and low vegetation cover. During winter, it occupies a variety of habitats, including grasslands, shrublands, open areas of the Espinal and Dry Chaco, as well as agricultural fields and other modified rural areas. During this period it may also reach northwestern Argentina, where it is recorded in the Monte of Sierras and Bolsones, Puna environments, and occasionally in high-elevation grasslands.

Diet: It feeds mainly on large insects and other terrestrial arthropods, although it also consumes small vertebrates such as lizards, small rodents, amphibians, and occasionally even the eggs or nestlings of other birds. It usually captures its prey on the ground, moving by means of short runs and small hops, although it occasionally makes brief pursuit flights.

Behavior: A predominantly terrestrial species, it is generally observed alone or in pairs during the breeding season, although during migration and wintering it may form small, dispersed groups. It frequently remains motionless on small exposed shrubs or clumps of vegetation, from where it surveys the ground before launching itself at its prey. It moves in quick runs, stopping abruptly and adopting an upright posture while slightly tilting its head to inspect the ground. It is generally a quiet species, occasionally producing sharp whistles and brief chattering notes, particularly during territorial interactions. During the breeding season, males perform characteristic aerial displays, rising into the air and subsequently allowing themselves to drop in a controlled descent accompanied by a faint buzzing sound produced by the outer wing feathers.

Nesting: It builds a cup-shaped nest made of stems, plant fibers, and feathers, generally placed at low height in shrubs. The clutch consists of two to three cream-colored eggs with reddish and purplish spots.

Conservation status: The species is categorized as Not Threatened (NA) at the national level and as Least Concern (LC) internationally. Although it has a relatively restricted distribution and generally low-density populations, it faces no significant known threats and maintains stable populations across much of its range.
