Is a medium-sized shorebird measuring between 7.5 and 8.6 inches (19 to 22 centimeters) in length and weighing approximately 70 to 90 grams. During the breeding season, it displays a highly distinctive nuptial plumage: the crown and nape are ash-gray, bordered by a prominent white supercilium that stretches well behind the eye. The throat is pale gray, contrasting sharply with a broad, vibrant rufous-chestnut breast band, which is defined at its lower margin by a thin black band. The rest of the lower underparts, including the belly and vent, are pure white. In non-breeding plumage, this striking appearance is lost; the bird becomes much duller and cryptic, showing grayish-brown upperparts and a diffuse, brownish breast band without the bright rufous and black tones. The bill is short, straight, and black, while the legs are grayish to dull pink.
Geographical distribution: This species undergoes a well-defined latitudinal migration within the Southern Cone of South America. Its breeding grounds are restricted to the far south, including southern Argentine and Chilean Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, and the Falkland Islands. At the end of the austral summer, the entire population migrates northward. During the non-breeding season, it can be found along coastal and inland areas of central and northern Chile, Uruguay, central and northern Argentina, and regularly reaches southern and southeastern Brazil (primarily Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, with occasional records as far north as Rio de Janeiro).
Habitat: Shows a pronounced ecological flexibility depending on the season. During the breeding cycle, it frequents open, barren areas such as peat bogs, dry gravel plains, upland moorlands, and damp grasslands within cold-temperate and subantarctic zones. Conversely, during the non-breeding wintering period, it transitions to coastal environments including sandy beaches, tidal mudflats, estuaries, and saltmarshes, as well as inland habitats such as short-grass pastures, plowed agricultural fields, and shallow saline lagoons.
Feeding: Is a carnivorous and invertivorous predator whose diet shifts according to seasonal food availability. It feeds on a diverse range of terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates, including insects (beetles, flies, and larvae), spiders, small crustaceans, intertidal mollusks, and annelids (earthworms and polychaetes). To capture prey, it utilizes the classic "run-stop-peck" foraging strategy typical of plovers, running rapidly across the ground, pausing to visually locate movement, and then darting forward to peck the prey from the substrate.
Behavior: Is highly gregarious during the non-breeding season, commonly aggregating in flocks of 10 to 50 individuals, although larger congregations can form at high-quality feeding sites. Its flight is swift, direct, and characterized by powerful wingbeats. Typically quiet while wintering, it only emits soft, melodious whistling calls when startled or taking flight. Upon returning to the breeding grounds in spring, flocks dissolve, and pairs establish strictly territorial, monogamous bonds, actively defending their territories through vocalizations and aerial displays.
Nesting: The breeding season takes place from October to January. The nest is a simple, shallow scrape made directly in sandy, gravelly, or peaty ground, often concealed next to a cushion plant, tuft of grass, or small rock. This scrape is sparsely lined with dry leaves, lichens, and small twigs. The female lays 2 to 3 eggs, which are olive to buff-colored and heavily patterned with dark brown and black speckles for exceptional camouflage. Both sexes participate in incubation, which lasts for approximately 26 to 28 days. The chicks are nidifugous, hatching covered in cryptic down and leaving the nest within hours to forage alongside their protective parents.
Conservation status: Is currently evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although the species has a vast geographic range and a stable overall population, it faces local conservation challenges. Key threats include coastal habitat loss and disturbance from tourism, urban development on wintering beaches, predation by introduced exotic species on breeding islands, and the potential impacts of climate change on delicate Patagonian peatland ecosystems.
