Description

Characterized as a medium-sized bird measuring approximately 28 to 30 centimeters in length. It possesses a predominantly grayish-brown plumage on its upperparts, blending into a paler, soft gray on its breast and belly. Its most defining physical traits include a vibrant bright blue orbital ring of bare skin surrounding each dark eye, and a striking white wing patch that forms a sharp border when the bird is perched and a broad, conspicuous band in flight. The sides of its neck display a subtle, iridescent pinkish or purplish sheen. It features a slightly decurved black bill and vivid reddish-pink legs and feet.

Geographical distribution: This species is native to the Pacific slope of South America. Its geographical range extends from southwestern Ecuador (specifically the provinces of Loja and El Oro), down through the entire coastal strip and low western Andean valleys of Peru, reaching into northern Chile (the regions of Arica and Parinacota, Tarapacá, and Antofagasta). Over recent decades, it has experienced a significant geographic expansion, moving further south and higher into mid-altitude valleys.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits arid to semi-arid ecosystems, dry scrublands, and coastal deserts up to altitudes of 2,000 meters above sea level. Highly adaptable to anthropogenic modifications, this taxon is frequently observed in agricultural lands, river valleys, orchards, urban parks, suburban gardens, and city centers. It thrives in areas where human irrigation projects have turned desert spaces into green zones.

Feeding: Its diet is predominantly granivorous and frugivorous. It feeds on a diverse range of wild seeds, commercial agricultural grains such as corn, wheat, and sorghum, as well as small fruits and berries from both native plants and ornamental garden shrubs. Foraging occurs almost exclusively on the ground, where individuals walk deliberately while scanning the substrate and flipping over small debris.

Behavior: It is widely recognized for its highly melodious, rhythmic, and repetitive three-syllable call, which is a defining acoustic feature of its native range. Generally diurnal, it is a social species that forms stable monogamous pairs during the breeding season and congregates in larger flocks during the non-breeding months near communal roosts or feeding grounds. When startled, it takes off with a direct, swift flight, generating a distinctive whirring sound with its wings.

Nesting: Nesting can occur year-round, depending heavily on regional rainfall patterns and resource availability. The pair constructs a flimsy, platform-like nest made of dry twigs, roots, and grasses, typically placed in the forks of dense trees, thorny shrubs, palms, or on artificial structures such as building ledges, beams, and hanging planters. The female lays a clutch of two smooth white eggs, which are incubated by both parents for approximately 14 days. The altricial nestlings are fed a highly nutritious substance known as "crop milk" secreted by both adults, transitioning to regurgitated seeds as they mature.

Conservation status: It is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The global population is stable and expanding, largely due to its remarkable ecological plasticity and its ability to benefit from agricultural expansion, urbanization, and the creation of artificial green spaces. There are no major threats endangering Zenaida meloda at present.
