Description


Characterized as a large and exceptionally robust hymenopteran, this insect exhibits physical measurements ranging between 20 and 30 millimeters in length, making it one of the most imposing members of its genus. Marked sexual dimorphism defines the species, where females display a shiny jet-black body with vibrant blue, green, or violet metallic reflections on their wings, complemented by prominent yellow or orange bands on the metasoma and distinct facial markings on the frons. On the other hand, males are clothed in a dense, velvety coat of yellowish-green or golden-brown pubescence and possess disproportionately large compound eyes designed for detecting females during flight. Both sexes possess strong, heavily sclerotized mandibles specialized for chewing through tough fibrous materials.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely throughout the Neotropical region. Its geographical range spans from southern Mexico through Central America (including countries such as Costa Rica and Panama), extending deep into South America across nations like Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, northern Argentina, and virtually all regions of Brazil, showing an impressive capacity for latitudinal adaptation.

Habitat: Colonizes a diverse array of terrestrial environments, including tropical rainforests, dry deciduous forests, savannas (such as the Brazilian Cerrado), scrublands, agricultural plantations, and urban green spaces. The presence of dead standing trees, decaying logs, or untreated structural lumber is a critical environmental requirement, as these elements provide the essential substrate for reproduction and shelter, allowing the species to adapt to human-modified landscapes where floral resources are abundant.

Feeding: Functions as a generalist or polylectic pollinator, foraging on a wide taxonomic range of flowering plants, with a strong preference for members of the families Solanaceae, Fabaceae, Bignoniaceae, and Passifloraceae. It is highly specialized in buzz pollination (sonication), a process where the bee grabs the flower and rapidly vibrates its indirect flight muscles to dislodge pollen from poricidal anthers, making it an indispensable ecological partner and the primary pollinator of commercial crops like the yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis).

Behavior: Exhibits a mostly solitary lifestyle, although multiple females may occasionally tolerate each other´s presence in close proximity, sharing common entrances to reproductive substrates. Males are highly territorial and exhibit aggressive defense behaviors, performing aerial patrols and hovering motionless in mid-air near floral patches or gallery entrances to intercept females and expel rival males. Females are highly industrious during daylight hours, displaying impressive long-distance foraging capabilities and spending significant energy on tunnel construction and maintenance.

Reproduction: The lifecycle begins when a mated female selects a suitable dead wood source to excavate. Utilizing her powerful mandibles, she bores a clean, circular entrance hole and digs out longitudinal tunnels parallel to the wood grain. Inside these tunnels, she creates linear chambers or cells, provisioning each with a consolidated ball of pollen and nectar known as bee bread. She deposits a single massive egg directly onto this food source before sealing the cell with a partition made of compacted wood dust cemented with salivary secretions. The larvae develop individually, consuming the provisions, pupating within the dark safety of the chamber, and finally chewing their way out as new adults.

Conservation status: Lacks a formal global assessment on the IUCN Red List and is currently categorized as Not Evaluated (NE). Nevertheless, localized populations face persistent threats from anthropogenic activities, such as intensive deforestation, the systematic removal of decaying timber from agricultural lands, and exposure to systemic pesticides, underlining the critical need to implement pollinator-friendly agricultural practices and preserve natural deadwood substrates.
