Description


This is a robust and medium-to-large-sized ophidian that typically reaches lengths of 90 to 120 centimeters, with some exceptional specimens measuring up to 150 centimeters. It exhibits a highly distinct head, which is wide, depressed, and clearly separated from the neck, featuring a pointed and slightly upturned snout due to a highly developed rostral scale. The dorsal coloration is remarkably variable, ranging from light brown, grayish, ochre, yellowish, to greenish, adorned with a series of dark, paired, trapezoidal, hourglass-shaped, or butterfly-like blotches bordered by lighter margins, which provides an outstanding Batesian mimicry with venomous lanceheads of the genus Bothrops. The dorsal scales are smooth and arranged in mid-body rows, while the ventral surface is typically whitish, yellowish, or grayish with irregular dark markings.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed across the Southern Cone of South America, spanning a vast territory that includes most of Brazil (excluding the dense Amazonian rainforest basin), central and eastern Bolivia, the entirety of Paraguay, and the northern and central regions of Argentina, extending as far south as the provinces of La Pampa and Buenos Aires.

Habitat: This highly adaptable reptile prefers open and semi-open ecosystems. It is commonly found in biomes such as the Cerrado, the dry and humid Chaco, the Pampa grasslands, and ecotonal regions. It shows a clear preference for humid areas near temporary or permanent bodies of water, although it successfully colonizes agricultural fields, disturbed habitats, and even suburban gardens and domestic yards.

Feeding: It is a highly specialized predator that feeds almost exclusively on anuran amphibians, showing a strong preference for true toads of the family Bufonidae, particularly those of the genus Rhinella. To overcome the defense mechanisms of its prey, this snake possesses enlarged, ungrooved posterior maxillary teeth that act as specialized tools to puncture and deflate toads that inflate themselves with air as a defense mechanism, thereby facilitating swallowing. Furthermore, it possesses an extraordinary physiological resistance to the potent cardiotoxic bufadienolides secreted by the parotoid glands of these amphibians.

Behavior: This species is primarily terrestrial and exhibits diurnal activity patterns. It is widely famous for its complex and dramatic defensive display. When confronted by a potential predator, it flattens its neck and head horizontally, creating a triangular shape or "hood" similar to that of a cobra, emits loud warning hisses, and vibrates its tail against the leaf litter to mimic the sound of a rattlesnake or a pit viper; however, it rarely attempts to bite, often performing mock strikes with its mouth closed or resorting to thanatosis (playing dead) if the threat continues.

Reproduction: It is an oviparous species whose reproductive cycle is closely synchronized with the warmest and rainiest seasons of the year, maximizing prey availability for the offspring. Following courtship and mating, the female deposits a clutch of 10 to 35 flexible-shelled, elliptical eggs in humid microhabitats, such as under decaying logs or inside dense leaf litter. The incubation period lasts between 60 and 70 days, giving rise to precocial hatchlings measuring approximately 15 to 20 centimeters in length, which are immediately capable of independent survival.

Conservation status: It is currently assessed as Least Concern (LC) on both regional and global levels due to its extensive geographical distribution, high ecological tolerance, and relatively stable populations. Nevertheless, it faces persistent anthropogenic threats, primarily direct persecution and killing by humans who mistake it for highly venomous pit vipers, highlighting the need for local environmental education programs.
