Description


Is a massive flying bird characterized by its extraordinary dimensions, representing one of the largest flying avian species globally. It boasts a massive wingspan measuring between 2.7 and 3.2 meters (8.9 to 10.5 feet) and a body weight that can range from 11 to 15 kilograms (24 to 33 pounds) in adult males. The plumage is almost entirely glossy black, contrasted beautifully by a fluffy white ruff encircling the base of the neck and prominent white patches on the wings, which expand and brighten as the bird matures. The head and neck are devoid of feathers, exposing a highly flexible skin that varies in coloration from dull red to pinkish-brown, a feature that can flush with intense color during social interactions or territorial displays. Males possess a prominent fleshy caruncle or comb on the crown of their head and have dark brown eyes, whereas females are smaller, lack the comb, and exhibit striking ruby-red eyes.

Geographical distribution Occurs throughout the entirety of the Andes Mountains range, stretching from western Venezuela and northern Colombia southward through the high elevations of Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, down to the southernmost expanses of Chile and Argentina in Tierra del Fuego. While northern populations are highly fragmented and critically small, the species maintains its strongest populations in the vast and wind-swept regions of Patagonia and southern South America, where human density is significantly lower.

Habitat: Inhabits high-altitude ecosystems, primarily ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 meters above sea level, where open grasslands, páramo, and puna sub-alpine zones dominate. In the southern limits of its distribution, the species descends to sea level, utilizing the open Patagonian steppe and nesting on rugged, wind-carved coastal cliffs adjacent to the Pacific Ocean, where thermal updrafts are constant and powerful enough to support its soaring requirements.

Feeding Functions as an obligate scavenger, depending entirely on the discovery of carrion for sustenance. Its natural diet centers on the carcasses of native wild herbivores like the guanaco (Lama guanicoe) and the Andean huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus), supplemented extensively by introduced livestock such as cows, horses, and sheep. Along the cold coastlines of South America, it feeds on marine mammal remains, including dead sea lions and beached cetaceans, acting as an essential environmental sanitary agent.

Behavior: Relies heavily on thermal updrafts and mountain wind currents to glide effortlessly for hours over vast territories, rarely flapping its wings to conserve metabolic energy. It is a highly gregarious species that aggregates at communal roosts located on sheer rocky cliffs, where individuals establish a strict linear dominance hierarchy wherein adult males dominate all other age and sex classes during feeding opportunities at carcass sites.

Nesting Exhibits a highly conservative reproductive rate, with pairs being strictly monogamous and often mating for life. The female produces a single bluish-white egg every two years, which is laid directly on the bare dirt or rock shelf within a deep cave or on an inaccessible cliff ledge, without any nesting material. Both parents share the incubation duties for a period of 54 to 60 days, and the single chick remains dependent on parental care for up to one year before successfully fledging and beginning its dispersal.

Conservation status Listed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List and categorized under Appendix I of CITES. Major human-driven threats include secondary poisoning from toxic baits meant for mammalian predators, lead accumulation from consuming carcasses containing lead ammunition, habitat degradation due to urbanization, and direct persecution due to unfounded conflicts with local livestock farming.
