Checkered Woodpecker

Belongs to the Picidae family and is characterized as a small-sized woodpecker measuring between 13 and 15 centimeters in length and weighing approximately 25 to 33 grams. It exhibits a distinctive dorsal plumage pattern with heavy blackish-brown and white barring, giving it a checkered appearance. The crown is dark, and males feature a small but distinct red patch on the hindcrown, interspersed with white streaks, which is completely absent in females. The underparts are whitish or pale buffy-white, covered with dense dark streaks and bars. The bill is straight, strong, and dark gray, specialized for chiseling wood, while the tail is stiff and short, acting as a prop when climbing.

Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed across the south-central region of South America. Its range encompasses central and northern Argentina, reaching the northern parts of Patagonia, central and southern Paraguay, western Uruguay, southeastern Bolivia, and the extreme southern portion of Brazil, particularly in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. It is a non-migratory, resident species.

Habitat: Occurs in a variety of open and semi-open woodland ecosystems. It is highly associated with the Chaco, Espinal, and Monte ecoregions, as well as gallery forests, wooded savannas, dry scrublands, agricultural orchards, suburban parks, and urban gardens. Its ecological plasticity allows it to thrive in anthropogenically altered environments.

Feeding: Its diet is predominantly insectivorous. It feeds on beetle larvae, ants, termites, and other small wood-boring insects. Foraging techniques include pecking, gleaning, and probing among thin twigs and branches, often foraging in higher strata and outer foliage where heavier woodpecker species cannot go due to its light weight.

Behavior: Typically observed singly or in pairs. It is an extremely active and agile bird, hopping quickly along branches and hanging upside down to forage. It regularly joins mixed-species feeding flocks during the non-breeding season. The flight pattern is deeply undulating, and communication involves sharp, high-pitched calls along with a short, rapid territorial drumming.

Nesting: Breeding occurs from late spring through early summer, mainly between September and December. Both sexes participate in excavating a nesting cavity, usually in dead tree trunks, decaying branches, or wooden fence posts, located at heights ranging from 2 to 6 meters above the ground. The clutch consists of 3 to 4 glossy white eggs. Incubation is shared by both parents and lasts about 12 days, with both adults actively feeding the chicks.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Thanks to its extensive geographic distribution, stable population trend, and remarkable tolerance to habitat fragmentation and degradation, it faces no immediate threats to its long-term survival.
