This medium-sized nymphalid butterfly features an average wingspan of 45 to 55 millimeters. The dorsal surface of its forewings presents a vibrant combination of orange and reddish-brown coloration, interspersed with dark, complex black markings and a distinct, deep black apical region decorated with prominent white spots. The hindwings display a more uniform orange-brown background adorned with a submarginal row of small, blue-centered eyespots. On the ventral side, the wings exhibit a highly intricate, cryptic pattern composed of grey, brown, and pinkish hues, designed for camouflage against bark and dry leaves. The most definitive diagnostic feature on this side is the presence of two large, prominent postmedial ocelli on each hindwing, which distinguishes it from related taxa in South America. Its body is robust, covered with dense, grayish-brown sensory hairs, and its antennae terminate in white-tipped knobs.
Geographical distribution: The species is widely distributed across the temperate and subtropical regions of southern South America. It is commonly recorded throughout southern and southeastern Brazil, spanning states like Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo, as well as across the entirety of Uruguay and Paraguay. In Argentina, its range extends from the northern subtropical provinces through the humid pampas down into northern Patagonia. Isolated populations and seasonal records also exist within the inter-Andean valleys of Bolivia. It exhibits a broad altitudinal tolerance, ranging from coastal plains at sea level up to mountainous regions reaching over 1,500 meters above sea level.
Habitat: It primarily occupies open and semi-open ecosystems. Typical environments include temperate grasslands, shrubby savannas, forest edges, riparian corridors, and clearings. Due to its high ecological plasticity, it has adapted exceptionally well to human-modified landscapes and is a frequent inhabitant of urban gardens, public parks, agricultural margins, roadside verges, and vacant lots where its larval host plants thrive. It shows a strong preference for sunny microhabitats that facilitate its active thermoregulation.
Feeding: This insect exhibits a dual dietary specialization depending on its life stage. The larvae are strictly herbivorous, feeding on the foliage of plants belonging to the family Asteraceae, with a marked preference for the genera Gamochaeta, Achyrocline, and Pseudognaphalium. Adult butterflies are primarily nectarivorous, utilizing their long, coiled proboscis to extract sugars from a wide variety of wild and ornamental flowers, showing a clear preference for white and yellow Asteraceae blossoms. Adults may also opportunistically puddle on wet soil, animal dung, or rotting fruit to acquire essential mineral salts and moisture.
Behavior: It is a strictly diurnal species characterized by a rapid, erratic, and powerful flight pattern, which it uses effectively to evade avian and insect predators. Males are highly territorial, frequently performing patrolling flights or perching on bare ground, stones, or low-lying leaves to monitor their surroundings and intercept potential mates or rival males. During cool mornings, adults engage in basking behavior, spreading their wings flat against the substrate to absorb solar radiation and raise their thoracic temperature to the threshold required for flight. Although not considered a long-distance migrant like some of its holarctic relatives, it undergoes localized seasonal migrations driven by temperature shifts and resource availability.
Reproduction: The reproductive cycle begins when a fertilized female deposits her small, ribbed, greenish eggs individually on the undersides of the leaves of a suitable host plant. Upon hatching, the solitary larvae construct protective shelters by folding the edges of a leaf and securing it with spun silk threads. Inside these shelters, the caterpillars feed and grow, passing through five distinct larval instars. Once fully grown, the caterpillar leaves the shelter to find a secure pupation site, where it suspends itself head-downwards by a cremaster to form a chrysalis. The pupal stage lasts approximately ten to fourteen days, depending heavily on ambient temperatures, culminating in the emergence of the fully formed adult butterfly.
Conservation status: This species has not been formally assessed for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, meaning it currently holds no official global conservation status. Locally, it is considered common and stable throughout its core range, aligning with an informal status of Least Concern. Nonetheless, urban and agricultural populations are increasingly vulnerable to localized threats, such as the heavy use of chemical pesticides and herbicides, which destroy both the caterpillars´ host plants and the wild nectar sources crucial for adult survival.
