Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This medium-sized passerine measures approximately 22 to 24 centimeters in length and weighs around 70 grams. Its plumage is predominantly a dull grayish-brown on the upperparts, whereas the underparts transition to a lighter pale gray or off-white on the lower belly, a chromatic pattern characteristic of the species Turdus leucomelas. The most defining diagnostic feature is its whitish throat streaked with dark brown lines, accompanied by a subtle yellowish or ochre orbital ring around its dark eyes. The bill is dark brown to blackish, and the legs are dull gray. Sexual dimorphism is virtually absent, making males and females look identical, though immature birds display distinct spotting on their breast and upperparts.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed across vast regions of South America. Its geographical range spans from eastern Colombia, Venezuela, and the Guianas, stretching southward through most of Brazil (excluding the dense, core Amazon basin), eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, into northeastern Argentina, and northernmost Uruguay.

Habitat: This species occupies a diverse array of semi-open and disturbed habitats. It is commonly found in secondary forests, forest edges, wooded savannas like the Cerrado, shrublands, agricultural lands, and urban areas such as city parks and suburban gardens. It exhibits remarkable ecological plasticity, readily adapting to human-modified landscapes as long as scattered trees and shrub cover are available for nesting and foraging.

Feeding: It has an omnivorous and highly opportunistic diet. It feeds extensively on invertebrates, including earthworms, beetles, ants, caterpillars, and spiders, which it captures by foraging on the ground and flipping leaf litter. This animal protein is heavily supplemented with various wild fruits and berries, making this passerine an essential seed disperser within its native ecosystems.

Behavior: It is a highly active and territorial bird, well-known for both its terrestrial habits and its vocal nature. It typically moves along the ground using deliberate hops, pausing frequently to scan for prey. The species produces a melodious and complex song consisting of rich, varied whistles, delivered most intensely at dawn and dusk during the nesting season. While generally solitary or found in pairs, individuals may gather in loose groups at abundant fruiting trees.

Nesting: The nesting cycle begins with the construction of a bulky, cup-shaped nest. It uses coarse plant fibers, twigs, dry leaves, and wet mud to bind the structure, lining the inner cup with fine rootlets and soft grass. Nests are typically placed in the fork of a tree or dense shrub, ranging from 1 to 5 meters above the ground. The female lays a clutch of 2 to 3 bluish-green eggs speckled with reddish-brown spots. Incubation, performed almost exclusively by the female, lasts for 12 to 14 days, after which both parents actively participate in feeding and protecting the nestlings until they fledge about two weeks later.

Conservation status: It is currently listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. This status is attributed to its extremely large geographic range, a stable population trend, and its remarkable ability to colonize degraded environments and urbanized zones, rendering it safe from immediate critical threats.
