Description


Is a medium-sized passerine bird measuring approximately 22 to 25 centimeters in length and weighing between 55 and 75 grams. The dorsal plumage is characterized by a uniform dull olive-brown coloration, which fades to a lighter shade on the underparts. The breast and flanks present a distinct grayish-brown wash, while the abdomen features a diagnostic creamy-buff or whitish coloration that distinguishes it from related sympatric species. Its throat is pale white, adorned with prominent dark brown streaks. The bill coloration is highly variable depending on age and breeding condition, ranging from dull yellow with a dark tip during the breeding season to an overall blackish-brown in winter. It exhibits a faint, pale yellow eye-ring and dark grayish legs.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across central and southeastern South America. Its geographic range extends throughout central and southern Brazil, eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and northern to central Argentina. The species is a partial austral migrant; populations nesting in the southern regions of its range during the spring and summer travel northward during the autumn and winter, wintering as far north as the Amazon Basin, eastern Peru, and northern Brazilian states.

Habitat: Inhabits a diverse array of open and semi-open ecosystems, displaying outstanding ecological plasticity. It is commonly found in gallery forests, forest edges, woodlands, shrubby savannas such as the Cerrado and Chaco, and secondary growth. Additionally, it has successfully adapted to human-modified landscapes, becoming a highly familiar bird in urban parks, residential gardens, orchards, and agricultural fields where it thrives near human dwellings.

Feeding: Has an omnivorous diet, adjusting its food consumption according to seasonal availability. It actively searches the ground for invertebrates, preying upon earthworms, beetles, caterpillars, ants, and spiders. It also consumes a large quantity of vegetable matter, feeding on ripe fruits and wild berries from both native and exotic plants, making this bird a key seed disperser within its ecological communities.

Behavior: Shows primarily solitary or paired habits, though it may gather in small, loose flocks during migration periods or around abundant fruiting trees. When foraging on the ground, it displays the classic thrush movement of short, rapid runs followed by sudden pauses, flipping dry leaves aside with its bill to uncover prey. It produces a melodious but relatively simple, hesitant song composed of clear whistled notes, delivered mostly at dawn and dusk from elevated perches.

Nesting: Constructs a sturdy, deep cup nest made of mud mixed with roots, dry leaves, moss, and twigs, neatly lined with finer plant fibers on the inside. The nest is typically situated in a fork of a branch within a tree or dense shrub, at heights ranging from 1.5 to 5 meters above the ground. The female lays a clutch of 2 to 4 eggs, which are greenish-blue densely speckled with reddish-brown spots. Incubation is performed almost exclusively by the female for about 12 to 14 days, after which both parents cooperatively feed the nestlings until they fledge approximately two weeks later.

Conservation status: Classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It boasts a large stable population and a vast geographic distribution. The species is highly resilient and benefits from moderate forest fragmentation and urban expansion, which expand its preferred semi-open habitats, ensuring its long-term survival without major immediate threats.
