The most distinctive anatomical feature of this lizard is the presence of a highly marked transverse black band on both sides of the neck, resembling a collar, bordered by a thin white line. The scales on its back are keeled and imbricated, giving it a rough texture to the touch, while the ventral region shows whitish or yellowish tones, often with dark mottling in dominant males.
Geographical distribution: Is widely distributed across the South American subcontinent, with a dominant presence in the territory of Brazil, covering a vast expanse that includes the states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, Espírito Santo, and Goiás. In addition to these central and eastern regions, its geographic range extends westward, reaching border zones in eastern Paraguay and localized areas of northern Argentina. This broad distribution demonstrates its great biogeographical adaptability across diverse altitudinal and ecological gradients in the Neotropical region.
Habitat: Prefers open and semi-open ecosystems with high levels of direct insolation. It is a highly representative species of the Cerrado formations (Brazilian savannas), sandy restingas along the coastal Atlantic Forest, and rocky outcrops locally known as lajedos. It possesses a markedly synanthropic character, allowing it to highly successfully colonize environments altered by human activity, such as stone walls, urban gardens, public parks, house roofs, and rubble piles, where it finds thermal refuges and abundant food resources.
Feeding: Possesses an opportunistic omnivorous diet, although its food base is predominantly insectivorous. The highest percentage of its prey consists of small terrestrial arthropods, among which ants (Hymenoptera) stand out, consumed in large quantities, followed by termites, beetles (Coleoptera), spiders, and grasshoppers. Complementarily, this lizard incorporates plant matter into its regular diet, consuming tender leaves, flowers, and small fleshy fruits from local plants such as cacti of the genus Melocactus, thus acting as a potential seed disperser in arid environments.
Behavior: Is a species of strictly diurnal habits with a strong dependence on heliothermy, dedicating the early hours of the morning to basking in the sun on rocky surfaces or elevated trunks to raise its internal body temperature. It employs a mixed hunting strategy, alternating periods of passive ambush ("sit-and-wait") with quick bursts of active foraging. Males are highly territorial and actively defend their areas through visual displays that include rhythmic up-and-down head movements (head-bobbing) and push-ups of the front legs. In the presence of predators such as birds of prey or snakes, it uses its remarkable speed to take refuge in narrow rock crevices or under the bark of fallen trees.
Reproduction: Its reproductive strategy is oviparous and shows a marked seasonality, with the highest copulatory and laying activity concentrating during the rainy season, when the availability of insects is abundant. After a courtship characterized by displays of coloration and cephalic movements by the male, the female lays her eggs in damp microhabitats protected from extreme heat, such as cavities under rocks, rotting logs, or leaf litter accumulations. The clutch size generally varies between 2 and 6 eggs with flexible shells. The incubation period depends on environmental thermal conditions and fluctuates between 60 and 80 days, hatching fully independent offspring with an approximate length of 30 mm that immediately begin their autonomous dispersal.
Conservation status: Is globally categorized as Least Concern (LC) according to the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This classification is due to its highly extensive distribution range, the stability of its general populations, and its extraordinary capacity to tolerate and even thrive in fragmented habitats and urbanized areas. There are no critical large-scale threats endangering the survival of this taxon in the short or medium term.
