Description


Belongs to one of the most imposing and largest groups of orthopteran insects in the Americas, easily distinguished by its massive body size and striking coloration. This species exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism, with females being significantly larger than males, reaching an impressive body length of 100 to 140 mm and a wingspan exceeding 230 mm, while males typically measure between 70 and 100 mm. The general body coloration varies from olive-green to grayish-brown and ochre, providing exceptional camouflage against branches and bark. Its pronotum features a highly developed, rugose, dark collar or crest. The most diagnostic and spectacular feature is revealed in flight: the hind wings are a brilliant violet-blue or deep purple, bordered by a broad black band. The hind legs are robust and specialized for powerful jumps, equipped with double rows of sharp, prominent tibial spines.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the Neotropical region of South America. It is highly abundant in northern and central Argentina (particularly in the Chaco region), across much of Brazil (especially in the Caatinga, Cerrado, and transitional forests), Paraguay, Bolivia, Uruguay, and northern areas of Colombia and Venezuela. Its distribution range fluctuates in response to climate variability, expanding into more temperate latitudes during hot, dry summers.

Habitat: Prefers arid, semi-arid, and transitional ecosystems, including dry forests, shrubby savannas, thorny steppes, and xerophytic scrublands. It is strongly associated with the Gran Chaco and Caatinga biomes. However, it readily adapts to human-modified landscapes and can be frequently found in agricultural borders, commercial forestry plantations, degraded pastures, and roadsides, showing remarkable ecological plasticity.

Feeding: Operating as a highly polyphagous herbivore, this species consumes a vast array of plant species. It exhibits a strong preference for woody trees and shrubs, particularly hard-wooded species such as quebracho (Schinopsis spp. and Aspidosperma spp.), acacias, and even cultivated exotic trees like eucalyptus and citrus crops. Armed with powerful mandibles, it can easily masticate tough, coriaceous leaves rich in lignin and tannins, allowing it to thrive on dry vegetation that other herbivores cannot process.

Behavior: Displays diurnal habits and undergoes dramatic behavioral shifts between developmental stages. Early-stage nymphs are highly gregarious, forming dense, coordinated marching bands (often referred to as saltonas) that travel along the ground, consuming almost all green foliage in their path. Upon reaching adulthood, they become solitary and arboreal, spending most of their time high in the forest canopy. They are strong, noisy fliers, capable of using wind currents to sustain flight over several kilometers to locate new feeding grounds or escape predators such as birds of prey.

Reproduction: Undergoes a hemimetabolous development cycle. Mating occurs primarily during warm periods associated with the onset of the rainy season, during which males court females using visual displays and substrate vibration. After copulation, the female uses her specialized ovipositor valves to drill into loose, sandy soils, depositing her eggs several centimeters deep inside a protective, foamy egg pod (ootheca). A single female can produce multiple pods, each containing between 80 and 120 eggs. The incubation duration depends heavily on soil temperature, and upon hatching, the nymphs undergo five to six instar stages before undergoing their final molt into winged, sexually mature adults.

Conservation status: Is not listed under any threat category by the IUCN, generally falling under the classification of Least Concern due to its vast geographic distribution and stable, often booming populations. In contrast, in several South American agricultural zones, it is officially classified as a major agricultural pest. Cyclical population explosions can lead to devastating swarms that cause extensive damage to both native forests and valuable commercial crops.
