Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized as a medium-sized psittacine, this bird attains an average total length of 28 centimeters and a body mass ranging between 110 and 155 grams. The plumage is uniformly dominated by a brilliant emerald green, displaying paler and more yellowish shades along the flanks and lower underparts. Marked sexual dimorphism is present: adult males exhibit a striking, well-defined patch of purplish-blue across the lower breast and belly, a feature entirely absent in females and immature individuals, whose ventral surfaces remain uniformly green. The bill is notably robust, strongly curved, and of an atypical horn-white to pale ivory coloration, set against a bare orbital ring of pale grayish skin and deep reddish-brown irises. The tail is comparatively long, graduated, and broad, providing stability during dynamic movements through dense vegetation.

Geographical distribution: Restricted as an endemic species to the Atlantic Forest biome of eastern South America. Its range is distributed in a discontinuous and fragmented pattern across southeastern and southern Brazil, spanning from southern Bahia and Espírito Santo, through Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, and Santa Catarina, down to northeastern Rio Grande do Sul. Marginally and historically, it has been documented in extreme northeastern Argentina, within primary forest patches in the province of Misiones, where contemporary confirmed sightings remain exceptionally scarce.

Habitat: Demonstrates a strict association with mature primary and tall secondary humid subtropical and tropical forests. It concentrates predominantly along shaded riverine corridors, steep valleys, and well-preserved slope forests within the Mata Atlântica formation. Its elevational distribution extends from coastal lowlands near sea level up to roughly 1,000 meters in montane areas, frequently frequenting sectors endowed with massive emergents, rich bromeliad assemblages, and an undisturbed continuous canopy.

Feeding: Functions predominantly as a specialized frugivore and granivore, adapting its foraging strategy to local phenological pulses. The diet incorporates fleshy fruits, pulp, and seeds from a wide variety of native trees, with particular emphasis on palms such as Euterpe edulis, as well as diverse taxa belonging to the families Myrtaceae, Lauraceae, and Moraceae. Additionally, it forages on buds, nectar, and tree sap, occasionally ingesting wood-boring insect larvae and small arthropods during the peak of the breeding season to satisfy elevated energetic requirements.

Behavior: Highly celebrated for its remarkable vocal abilities, it delivers rich, melodious, flute-like song phrases that closely resemble the complex songs of passerines such as thrushes, rather than the harsh, repetitive shrieks typical of parrots. It maintains an elusive, shy, and generally silent demeanor while perching quietly in the dense subcanopy. Typically encountered alone or in mated pairs, it flies swiftly below the tree crowns with deep, rapid wingbeats, seldom forming large social flocks unless drawn to localized, high-yield fruiting trees.

Nesting: The reproductive phase takes place primarily from September through January. The species relies entirely on natural cavities situated high up in large-diameter, mature tree trunks, or deep hollows created by wood-decay fungi and abandoned woodpecker excavations. The clutch generally comprises 2 to 4 white eggs, which are incubated exclusively by the female for an estimated 25 to 28 days. The male performs regular feeding visits via regurgitation during this period. The altricial nestlings are brooded and fed by both parents, fledging after approximately 49 to 56 days within the protective cavity.

Conservation status: Classified globally as Near Threatened (NT) by the IUCN. The taxon suffers severe population declines driven by pervasive deforestation, commercial logging of timber trees that provide suitable nest hollows, and intense agricultural conversion throughout its restricted biome. Historical capture for the domestic wild bird trade has placed further localized pressure on isolated populations, emphasizing the urgent need for structural ecological corridors and expanded protected areas.
