Description


Belonging to the Thraupidae family, this medium-sized passerine is characterized by an average length of 16.5 centimeters and a weight ranging from 20 to 26 grams. The species exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism. The adult male features a soft olive-gray back and rump, contrasting with warm cinnamon-buff underparts. Its most defining field mark is a prominent velvety black mask surrounding the eyes and extending across the lores, combined with a semi-concealed, erectile bright yellow crown patch that is typically exposed during territorial displays or alarm. Females lack both the black facial mask and the yellow crown, presenting an overall duller coloration dominated by olive-brown upperparts and a paler buff underbelly. Both sexes have dark irises and a bill with a blackish maxilla and a bluish-gray mandible.

Geographical distribution: This bird is native to the southern and eastern regions of South America. It is widely distributed across eastern and southeastern Brazil (from Bahia and Minas Gerais southward to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina, specifically restricted to the humid forests of the Misiones province.

Habitat: It primarily occupies the understory and mid-story of humid tropical and subtropical forests, particularly within the Atlantic Forest biome. It is frequently encountered in secondary growth forests, forest edges, bamboo thickets, and dense gallery forests, demonstrating a high tolerance for disturbed woodlands from sea level up to elevations of 1,250 meters.

Feeding: It has an omnivorous diet that consists of a wide variety of small invertebrates and berries. It actively searches for insects, spiders, and larvae by gleaning foliage in dense vegetation. It also consumes small fruits, particularly from families such as Melastomataceae, often foraging at lower vegetation levels.

Behavior: Highly active and social, this species is usually observed in pairs or small family cohorts. It is a nuclear species in mixed-species flocks of the forest understory, often acting as a sentinel by emitting sharp warning calls to alert other species of potential predators. It is also a frequent follower of army ant swarms, capturing flushed insects from the forest floor.

Nesting: It constructs a neat, cup-shaped nest using dry leaves, twigs, plant fibers, and moss, lined with softer materials. The nest is typically placed in the fork of a low shrub or small tree, between 1 and 2.5 meters above the ground. The clutch consists of 2 to 3 greenish-blue eggs speckled with dark brown spots, which are incubated chiefly by the female for about 12 to 14 days.

Conservation status: It is evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Due to its tolerance of fragmented habitats and secondary forests, its population trend is considered stable, and it does not currently face imminent threats of extinction.
