Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is a medium-to-large ground-dwelling bird characterized by a plump body and a total length of approximately 39 to 43 centimeters. Its plumage exhibits an intricate and highly cryptic pattern dominated by grayish-brown, buff, and blackish tones, which provides superb camouflage against the sparse Andean soils. The head and neck feature a highly distinctive ornamental pattern of stark black and white longitudinal stripes that extend downward into fine streaking on the upper breast. The lower belly and vent regions display a contrasting warm rufous or cinnamon coloration. The bill is short, sturdy, and dark gray, while the legs, adapted primarily for walking and running, lack a functional hind toe and present a distinct blue-gray coloration.

Geographical distribution: It is strictly endemic to the high-elevation Andean plateaus of western South America. Its range encompasses southern Peru, western Bolivia, northern Chile (specifically the regions of Arica y Parinacota, Tarapacá, and Antofagasta), and northwestern Argentina (including the provinces of Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, and Catamarca).

Habitat: This species restricts its activities to the high-altitude Puna grassland and shrubland biomes, typically occurring at elevations between 3,800 and 5,000 meters above sea level. It favors dry, rocky slopes dominated by bunchgrasses such as Festuca and Stipa (collectively known as ichu), as well as the edges of high-altitude peat bogs locally called bofedales, where moisture supports cushions of green vegetation.

Feeding: It is an omnivorous species with a strong herbivorous preference. Its diet is largely composed of seeds, plant shoots, leaves, roots, and tubers, which it unearths by scratching the dry soil or pecking directly at the substrate. During the rainy season, it opportunistically supplements this diet by consuming insects, larvae, and other terrestrial invertebrates, which provide vital nutrients during the breeding period.

Behavior: Strongly terrestrial and highly reluctant to take flight, it relies on its swift running ability to escape predators, often sprinting uphill or crouching low in the vegetation. Unlike many other members of its family that are strictly solitary, this taxon is notoriously social, frequently forming flocks of 5 to 30 individuals outside the breeding season. It communicates through loud, musical, and complex vocalizations, often performing coordinated group choruses of clear whistles that carry across the open altiplano during dawn and dusk.

Nesting: Breeding activity occurs mostly between November and March, aligning with the altiplano´s rainy season. The nest is a shallow scrape on the ground, sparsely lined with dry grass and downy feathers, hidden beneath a dense clump of bunchgrass or a low woody shrub. The clutch typically contains 4 to 8 glossy, emerald-green or turquoise eggs with a porcelain-like sheen. This species exhibits a polygynandrous mating system; the male alone is responsible for incubating the eggs for approximately 20 to 22 days and subsequently raising the precocial chicks, which leave the nest shortly after hatching.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its global populations are considered stable, some localized populations face threats from agricultural expansion, overgrazing by domestic camelids and sheep, uncontrolled burning of grasslands, and localized subsistence hunting.
