Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by a slender silhouette and a highly pronounced sexual dimorphism, this small passerine measures approximately 14 centimeters in length and weighs between 14 and 17 grams. The adult male features a predominantly slate-grey body plumage, which creates a striking contrast with its rich chestnut-rufous head, nape, and throat. Additionally, it displays a distinct deep black facial mask concentrated around the forehead and the lores, surrounding the dark reddish-brown eyes. Conversely, the female exhibits a much more cryptic and subdued coloration; her upperparts are mostly olive-green, while her crown and face are washed with a pale ochreous-yellow or dull cinnamon, blending into a pale greyish belly. In both sexes, the bill is conical, robust, and dark grey with a lighter base on the lower mandible, and the legs are remarkably dark, ranging from leaden grey to black.

Geographical distribution: Occurs endemically in east-central South America, spanning a geographic range that encompasses southeastern and southern Brazil (from Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo southwards through Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Paraná, down to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina, where its distribution is almost exclusively restricted to the province of Misiones.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits the dense understory of subtropical and temperate humid forests, being tightly associated with the Atlantic Forest biome. It shows a strong preference for forest edges, second-growth woodlands, clearing margins, and particularly thick stands of native bamboo of the genus Chusquea. Its altitudinal range is extensive, stretching from sea level in the southern parts of its distribution up to elevations of 2200 meters above sea level in the northern mountainous regions.

Feeding: Maintains an omnivorous and opportunistic diet, feeding primarily on small arthropods, such as spiders and various insects, which it gleans actively from dense foliage, twigs, and vine tangles. It supplements this insectivorous diet by consuming small wild berries, seeds, and soft fruits of understory shrubs, adapting its foraging behavior according to the seasonal availability of forest resources.

Behavior: Exhibits highly secretive and skulking habits, making it difficult to detect within the tangled undergrowth. It typically moves stealthily alone, in pairs, or in small family groups, keeping close to the ground. Although it prefers the lower strata of the forest, it occasionally joins mixed-species flocks of understory insectivores. Its vocal repertoire is composed of thin, high-pitched, sibilant call notes described as a sharp "tsip", alongside a soft, melodious territorial song delivered from deep cover.

Nesting: Breeding activity occurs mainly during the spring and summer months, corresponding with the peak of food abundance. It constructs a deep, open-cup nest using fine grass stems, dry leaves, rootlets, and moss, carefully hidden at low heights, typically under 1.5 meters above the ground within dense shrubs or thick bamboo clumps. The female lays a clutch of 2 to 3 eggs, which are pale greenish-white or cream-colored, speckled with reddish-brown spots concentrated at the larger end, and undertakes the primary responsibility for incubation.

Conservation status: Categorized globally as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its global population is considered stable and it occupies a relatively large range, its local populations are increasingly threatened by habitat fragmentation, deforestation, and the degradation of the Atlantic Forest, emphasizing the critical importance of preserving continuous forest corridors.
