Description


This is a small to medium-sized lepidopteran that typically features a wingspan measuring between 25 and 32 millimeters. The dorsal surface of both the forewings and hindwings displays a predominantly dark brown or deep black ground color, which is sharply contrasted by transverse bands and patches of pale orange, fulvous, or ochreous tones. In stark contrast, the ventral side of the wings is much lighter, dominated by cream, pale yellow, and light tan shades, adorned with an intricate pattern of fine, wavy brownish lines and subtle pearly spots near the outer margin, providing highly effective camouflage that mimics dead leaves when the insect rests with its wings folded upright.

Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed across the temperate and subtropical zones of South America, with documented biological records spanning central and southern Brazil, particularly within the Paraná River basin, eastern Paraguay, and the northeastern provinces of Argentina, such as Misiones, Corrientes, and Entre Ríos, reaching its southern limits in parts of Uruguay.

Habitat: It colonizes a variety of open and semi-open ecosystems, exhibiting a strong ecological association with Atlantic Forest clearings, edges of the Paranaense rainforest, riparian corridors, humid grasslands, and ecological transition zones. Its presence is highly dependent on microclimates with moderate levels of humidity and sufficient solar exposure where secondary growth vegetation thrives.

Feeding: The dietary regime changes dramatically throughout its ontogeny. The adults are primary nectarivores, obtaining essential sugars and amino acids from the inflorescences of various herbaceous and shrubby plants, mostly belonging to the family Asteraceae. Additionally, males are frequently observed gathering in damp soil, sand, or decomposing organic matter to absorb essential mineral salts and sodium, a physiological behavior known as puddling or mud-puddling, which is crucial for successful reproduction. In contrast, the caterpillars are strictly folivorous, feeding exclusively on the leaf tissues of plants in the genus Mikania and other closely related genera within the tribe Eupatorieae.

Behavior: It exhibits strictly diurnal activity patterns, with flight peaks occurring during the hours of maximum solar radiation. The flight is low, slow, undulating, and kept close to the vegetation, alternating rapid wingbeats with short glides. During the early morning, it engages in thermoregulation by basking with its wings fully spread flat on sun-exposed leaves. Males exhibit territorial and patrolling behaviors, defending strategic perches along forest trails and clearings against conspecific rivals or other nymphalid species.

Reproduction: The reproductive process begins with a ritualized aerial courtship display. After fertilization, the female deposits small clusters of yellowish or pale greenish eggs on the underside of young leaves of the host plant. These eggs are subconical and ribbed. Upon hatching, the young larvae display a highly gregarious behavior during their early developmental instars, spinning a fine communal silk web that offers protection against predators and desiccation. In the final instars, the caterpillars disperse to feed individually before seeking a sheltered site to undergo pupation, transforming into a suspended chrysalis attached to the substrate by the cremaster, displaying cryptic brownish coloration that resembles decaying vegetation or bark.

Conservation status: The species is not currently listed under any threat category on the global IUCN Red List, rendering it informally categorized as Not Evaluated (NE). Despite its adaptability to moderately disturbed habitats, localized populations remain vulnerable to habitat fragmentation, the conversion of native forests into agricultural fields, and the widespread application of chemical herbicides that eradicate their essential larval host plants.
