Belongs to a group of small-sized lepidopterans characterized by a wingspan ranging from 28 to 35 millimeters. It displays a highly striking dorsal wing pattern dominated by bright orange bands bordered by dark brownish-black margins and spots, creating a distinctive checkered or mosaic appearance typical of its taxonomic group. The ventral side of the wings is much paler and highly cryptic, combining subtle shades of pale yellow, ochre, and grayish-silver with fine, wavy lines, allowing the butterfly to camouflage effectively as a dry leaf when resting with its wings completely closed. Its antennae are slender and end in a well-defined club with a light-colored tip. The body is predominantly dark on the dorsal side and significantly lighter on the ventral surface.
Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed across the temperate, tropical, and subtropical regions of South America. Its presence is documented in high and continuous abundance throughout central and southern Brazil (particularly in states like São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul), northeastern Argentina (principally in the provinces of Misiones, Corrientes, and Chaco), most of Paraguay, and the northernmost areas of Uruguay. This extensive geographical range highlights its remarkable capacity to adapt to diverse climatic gradients within the Southern Cone.
Habitat: Primarily inhabits the edges of temperate and subtropical forests, ecological ecotones, clearings in the Atlantic Forest, shrubby grasslands, riparian corridors, and human-modified areas such as suburban gardens, urban parks, and roadsides. It prefers open spots that receive direct sunlight during most of the day while simultaneously offering sufficient shrubby vegetation to find adequate shelter from strong winds and natural predators.
Feeding: As an adult, it feeds primarily on the nectar of various wildflowers, showing a strong taxonomic preference for members of the family Asteraceae, particularly species within the genera Mikania and Bidens. This nectar-feeding behavior makes it an important local pollinator within its ecosystems. Conversely, the larvae or caterpillars are highly specialized herbivores, feeding almost exclusively on the tender leaves of their host plants, which also predominantly belong to the genus Mikania, consuming leaf tissue to sustain their rapid growth and development.
Behavior: Exhibits strictly diurnal biological activity, being most active during the hours of peak solar radiation. It features a low, erratic, and relatively slow flight pattern, usually remaining less than one meter above the ground. It is highly common to observe males of this species perching on low vegetation or gathering on damp soil to engage in puddling, absorbing dissolved sodium and other mineral salts essential for their reproductive physiology. They also display strong territorial behavior, actively guarding sunny patches of vegetation to intercept receptive females.
Reproduction: The reproductive cycle begins with a brief aerial courtship that precedes mating in sunny clearings. Fertilized females lay clusters of small eggs on the underside of host plant leaves from the Asteraceae family. The newly hatched caterpillars are highly gregarious during their initial instars, sometimes constructing a loose protective silk web to feed collectively and shield themselves from predators. As they mature and undergo several larval molts, they become solitary before forming a chrysalis (pupa) suspended from a stem or leaf, from which the adult butterfly eventually emerges after a variable period determined by ambient temperature.
Conservation status: Has not been formally evaluated globally on the IUCN Red List but is widely regarded by specialists as a species of Least Concern (LC) due to its extensive geographical distribution and high tolerance for disturbed and human-altered environments. However, intense habitat loss driven by large-scale deforestation and urban sprawl can lead to the fragmentation and decline of isolated local populations of this taxon.
