Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Belongs to a specialized group of South American passerines that are highly adapted to arid and semi-arid environments, characterized by a medium size ranging from 16 to 18 centimeters (6.3 to 7 inches) in total length and a body mass of 22 to 31 grams. Its morphological profile highlights a long, slender, and slightly decurved bill, which is blackish-grey in color and perfectly suited for probing the substrate. The upperparts exhibit a drab greyish-brown plumage that transitions into a warmer rufous shade on the rump. The tail feathers display a diagnostic pattern clearly visible in flight, featuring dark central rectrices and outer feathers tipped with broad, rufous-cinnamon bands. The throat is a striking, contrasting bright white, which transitions to a warm buffy-brown chest and flank region, becoming paler and creamier toward the center of the abdomen. No significant sexual dimorphism is present, as males and females share identical plumage and measurements.

Geographical distribution: This species is endemic to the southern-central cone of South America, with its distribution centered primarily on the Gran Chaco biome. Its range encompasses southeastern Bolivia (specifically Santa Cruz and Tarija departments), western Paraguay (the dry Chaco region), and central-northern Argentina. Within Argentine territory, it ranges from the northern provinces of Jujuy, Salta, and Formosa southward through the arid pampean shrublands of Mendoza, San Luis, and La Pampa, reaching its southern limit in northern Patagonia within Río Negro province.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits dry deciduous woodlands, xerophytic scrublands, and thorny shrub steppes. It is highly adapted to the extreme climate of the dry Chaco, showing a strong preference for areas with sandy or clay soils, terrestrial bromeliads, dense thorny undergrowth, and accumulated leaf litter beneath the canopy. It occurs from sea level up to elevations of approximately 1000 meters (3300 feet), avoiding humid forests and high-altitude grasslands.

Feeding: The diet is strictly insectivorous, consisting of a wide variety of terrestrial arthropods such as beetles, ants, larvae, spiders, and grasshoppers. It conducts its foraging activities exclusively on the ground, using its curved bill to flick away dead leaves, probe deep cracks in dry clay soils, flip small stones, and glean insects from the bark at the base of woody shrubs.

Behavior: It is a highly terrestrial and secretive bird, usually encountered singly or in pairs. It moves across the ground with remarkable speed, running swiftly between cover while holding its tail cocked at a steep angle, a characteristic postural trait of many terrestrial ovenbirds. It is generally shy and difficult to observe, choosing to retreat deep into dense thorny bushes when approached. Its vocalization is loud and striking, consisting of a series of harsh, rhythmic rattling trills used to advertise its territory within the dense dry woodland.

Nesting: The breeding cycle begins with territorial displays and the excavation of a nesting site. This species nests in horizontal burrows that both partners dig into earthen banks, ravines, roadside ditches, or sandy slopes. These tunnels can measure between 0.5 and 1.5 meters (1.6 to 5 feet) in length, terminating in an enlarged nesting chamber lined with dry grasses, soft plant fibers, bark strips, and occasionally feathers. It may also utilize artificial pipes or old abandoned cavities. The female lays 3 to 4 pure white eggs. Both parents share the duties of incubating the clutch and feeding the fast-growing chicks.

Conservation status: According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, the species is classified under the category of Least Concern (LC). Its overall population is estimated to be stable, and it faces no immediate global threats, thanks to its extensive range and relative tolerance to moderate habitat alteration, though local populations are impacted by the ongoing conversion of Chaco woodlands into agricultural lands.
