An agile, small-sized flying mammal characterized by a body mass ranging from 8 to 15 grams and a wingspan of approximately 28 to 35 centimeters. The dense, short fur presents coloration varying from dark brown to grayish tones, with a slightly paler underbelly. Its most diagnostic anatomical feature is the free tail, which extends significantly beyond the posterior edge of the interfemoral membrane (uropatagium), comprising nearly half of the tail´s total length. It exhibits broad, square ears with prominent transverse ridges that nearly meet at the midline of the forehead, alongside a deeply wrinkled upper lip featuring vertical grooves. The wings are notably long, narrow, and designed for rapid, high-altitude, and energetically efficient long-distance flight.
Geographical distribution: This highly adaptable species boasts one of the most extensive geographical distributions of any mammal in the Western Hemisphere, spanning from the southern United States (including vast populations in Texas, California, and New Mexico), southward through Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean islands, into South America, reaching as far as Brazil, Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay. Northern populations are highly migratory, traveling thousands of miles south to warmer climates for winter, whereas southern populations are generally sedentary or exhibit localized, short-distance movements.
Habitat: It occupies an extraordinarily diverse range of ecosystems, demonstrating high ecological plasticity by settling in arid deserts, temperate pine-oak forests, open grasslands, agricultural valleys, and densely populated urban areas. Preferred roosting sites include limestone caves, abandoned mines, cliff crevices, and various human-built structures such as bridges, highway overpasses, building roofs, and dark tunnels. These roosts must provide specific thermal dynamics to support massive aggregations, particularly during the critical rearing season.
Feeding: It is an obligate insectivore with an immense metabolic demand, consuming up to half of its body weight in insects every single night. It utilizes advanced frequency-modulated echolocation to detect, track, and capture prey mid-air, often foraging at altitudes exceeding 3,000 meters above ground level. The diet consists predominantly of beetles, moths (specifically agricultural pests within the family Noctuidae), flies, and true bugs, positioning this species as a vital biological control agent that saves billions of dollars annually in crop damage.
Behavior: Highly gregarious, this mammal aggregates into some of the largest wildlife colonies known to science, with single cave populations numbering in the millions. It is an exceptional flyer, capable of reaching horizontal flight speeds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour. It maintains strictly nocturnal habits, exiting roosts in spectacular, swirling clouds at dusk to begin foraging, and returning in synchronized aerial dives just before dawn.
Reproduction: The mating system is polygynous, occurring during late winter or early spring. Pregnant females aggregate in specialized, highly dense maternity colonies where they undergo a gestation period of approximately 11 to 12 weeks. Females give birth to a single pup annually, which is born hairless and blind but equipped with strong claws to cling to the cave walls. Lactation lasts between 4 and 7 weeks, during which mothers utilize highly specific vocalizations and olfactory cues to locate their specific offspring among millions of huddled pups.
Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Despite its global abundance, local populations are highly susceptible to habitat degradation, human disturbance of roosting caves, pesticide accumulation from agricultural runoff, and collision mortality associated with poorly sited wind energy facilities along their migratory flyways.
