Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Exhibits striking sexual dimorphism and measures approximately 7.3 inches (18.5 centimeters) in length, with an average weight of 33 grams. The adult male of this taxon, scientifically known as Tachyphonus rufus, features a uniform, glossy coal-black plumage, accented dramatically by white underwing coverts that are usually hidden at rest but vividly revealed during flight, stretching, or territorial displays. In contrast, the female is entirely rufous-brown, paler on her underparts, creating an appearance so distinct that the sexes were once thought to be different species. The bill is stout, conical, and blackish, with a prominent bluish-white patch at the base of the lower mandible, which is particularly visible in males.

Geographical distribution: Occurs broadly across the Neotropics, ranging from southern Costa Rica and Panama southward through Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, and Trinidad and Tobago. Its range extends further south across eastern Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, major portions of Brazil, and into northeastern Argentina.

Habitat: Prefers semi-open areas, forest borders, second-growth woodlands, dense shrublands, agricultural plantations, and suburban gardens. It is highly adaptable to human-altered environments, showing a preference for disturbed habitats over dense, primary forest interiors, and can be found from sea level up to elevations of 4,900 feet (1,500 meters), occasionally higher in Andean valleys.

Feeding: Maintains an omnivorous diet, feeding heavily on a variety of wild fruits, berries, and nectar, supplemented by a diverse array of invertebrates. It actively searches for food in the lower and middle strata of the canopy, gleaning insects such as beetles, caterpillars, and ants, as well as spiders, directly from foliage or capturing them through short, agile aerial sallies.

Behavior: Is a conspicuous and active bird, typically encountered in pairs or small family parties rather than large monospecific flocks. Males frequently engage in postural displays, flicking their wings open to flash the hidden white underwing patches to signal territory or attract mates. They are moderately territorial but will readily join mixed-species foraging flocks when moving through feeding corridors.

Nesting: Involves the construction of a bulky, deep-cup nest built solely by the female using dry leaves, coarse plant fibers, rootlets, and spiderwebs. This structure is typically concealed low in dense vegetation, vines, or shrubs, usually between 3 and 10 feet (1 to 3 meters) above the ground. The clutch consists of 2 to 3 creamy-white or pale-greenish eggs, heavily speckled with dark brown and lilac markings. Incubation is performed entirely by the female for 12 to 14 days, after which both parents share the responsibility of feeding and brooding the nestlings until they fledge, roughly 11 to 14 days after hatching.

Conservation status: Is evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. This status is justified by its vast geographical range, stable population trend, and high tolerance for habitat fragmentation, allowing it to thrive in suburban areas and regenerating agricultural landscapes where other forest specialists cannot survive.
