Representing a highly specialized group of flightless waterfowl, this robust and heavy-bodied anatid is characterized by its massive structure and unique marine lifestyle. The species exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism alongside seasonal plumage variations. During the breeding season, adult males display a nearly pure white head, which contrasts sharply with their lead-gray body plumage and a bright orange-yellow bill tipped with a prominent black nail. Females, in contrast, possess a darker brownish-gray head marked by a conspicuous white postocular stripe that curves down the neck. Weighing between 3.5 and 4.2 kilograms, their wings are highly reduced in proportion to their body mass, rendering them entirely flightless. Their legs are short, thick, and colored orange-yellow, engineered to provide maximum power for swimming and climbing over slippery coastal rocks.
Geographical distribution: This species has one of the most restricted geographic ranges of any member of the family Anatidae, being strictly endemic to the Atlantic coast of Argentine Patagonia. Its global range is confined almost exclusively to the coastline of the Chubut Province, stretching from the Valdés Peninsula in the north to the southern limits of the San Jorge Gulf. The highest population densities and most critical breeding colonies are concentrated on offshore islands and archipelagos, most notably within the Vernacci Islands and the protected marine environments surrounding Bahía Bustamante.
Habitat: The ecological niche of this waterfowl is strictly marine-coastal, showing a total avoidance of inland freshwater systems. It primarily frequents rocky shorelines, sheltered bays, shallow channels, estuaries, and extensive intertidal reefs that become exposed during low tide. It prefers continental and insular shorelines sheltered from high-energy waves, particularly those with abundant kelp beds and a diverse substrate rich in benthic life, while avoiding open sandy beaches.
Feeding: As a specialized benthic carnivore, its diet consists almost entirely of marine macroinvertebrates. It obtains its food through surface diving in shallow waters or by foraging among exposed rocks during low tide. The diet is heavily dominated by bivalve mollusks (such as mussels), gastropods, and various species of decapod crustaceans, especially crabs belonging to the genera Cyrtograpsus and Halicarcinus. Utilizing its powerful, thick bill and highly developed jaw musculature, it easily crushes the hard shells and exoskeletons of its prey before swallowing them whole.
Behavior: Lacking the ability to fly, it has evolved a highly energetic and distinctive method of surface locomotion known as "steaming." When threatened or defending territory, it runs rapidly across the water´s surface, using its short wings alternately like paddles to create a dramatic spray resembling a steamboat. This species is extraordinarily territorial and aggressive. Throughout the breeding season, pairs defend their territories with extreme violence, using hard, keratinous carpal knobs on their wing joints to strike competitors and intruders during intense physical battles.
Nesting: Nesting activity takes place during the southern spring and summer, typically commencing in October. Nests are constructed on the ground, deeply concealed within dense coastal shrub vegetation (primarily Atriplex species) or underneath rocky ledges just above the high-tide line. The nest is a shallow scrape lined with dry grasses and twigs, heavily insulated with a thick layer of down feathers plucked from the female’s breast. A typical clutch consists of 5 to 7 cream-colored eggs. Incubation is performed solely by the female for roughly 30 days, while the male guards the territory from the nearby water, acting as an aggressive sentinel against predators.
Conservation status: The species is currently listed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List. Its vulnerability is primarily due to its extremely restricted geographic distribution and relatively small global population size. The most immediate threats to its long-term survival include oil spills resulting from commercial shipping routes along the Patagonian shelf, coastal habitat degradation from unregulated tourism, and the potential introduction of invasive terrestrial predators, such as the American mink, which can easily devastate island nesting colonies.
