Description

This slender and compact passerine represents a classic example of the Hirundinidae family. It measures between 11.5 and 13 centimeters in length and weighs approximately 17 to 20 grams. The dorsal plumage is characterized by a vibrant metallic blue-green gloss that contrasts sharply with its diagnostic white rump. A prominent, narrow white supraloral stripe begins at the base of the bill and extends back just above each eye, creating a distinctive eyebrow. The ventral side is entirely pure white, including the chest, abdomen, and underwing coverts, which may have a faint grayish tinge. Its bill is short, broad-based, and black, matching its small, delicate feet. Sexual dimorphism is minimal; females are slightly duller in coloration than males. Juveniles can be easily distinguished by their brownish-gray upperparts, lacking the metallic iridescence of mature individuals.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed across the Southern Cone of South America. The breeding range encompasses northern and central Argentina, the entirety of Uruguay, Paraguay, and southern Brazil (ranging from Rio Grande do Sul north to São Paulo). During the southern winter, southernmost populations undertake a significant migration northward, wintering in northern Bolivia, southeastern Peru, and central or northern Brazil, operating as an intratropical migrant of moderate distance.

Habitat: This species exhibits a strong preference for open and semi-open landscapes, heavily favoring areas in close proximity to bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, marshes, estuaries, and seasonal wetlands. It is regularly observed over grasslands, agricultural pastures, savannas, and rural fields. Furthermore, it has successfully colonized human-modified environments, becoming a common inhabitant of suburban parks, urban residential zones, and industrial outskirts where nesting structures are readily available.

Feeding: It is an obligate aerial insectivore, capturing its food almost exclusively on the wing. Its diet consists of a diverse range of flying insects, including dipterans (flies and mosquitoes), small coleopterans (beetles), hymenopterans (winged ants and wasps), hemipterans, and odonates. It executes rapid, erratic flights close to the ground or just above the water surface, utilizing its wide gape to scoop up prey in mid-air with high efficiency.

Behavior: Highly gregarious by nature, it frequently congratulates in large flocks, especially during the non-breeding season, often joining mixed-species groups with other swallows. Its flight is characterized by its agility, speed, and elegance, alternating rapid, fluttery wingbeats with extended gliding phases. It is commonly seen perching in rows on telephone wires, fence lines, and bare branches. While social in communal roosts, breeding pairs become fiercely territorial around their selected cavity sites during the nesting cycle.

Nesting: This species is a cavity nester, relying on pre-existing cavities rather than excavating its own. Natural nest sites include hollows in dead trees, while artificial alternatives consist of holes in buildings, metal pipes, nest boxes, and abandoned mud nests of the Rufous hornero (Furnarius rufus). The nest itself is a cup-shaped structure woven from dry grasses and heavily lined with a dense layer of soft feathers, typically white ones collected from waterbirds. The female lays a clutch of 4 to 6 pure white eggs, which she incubates for approximately 15 to 16 days. Both parents participate in feeding the altricial chicks, which remain in the nest for about 20 to 22 days before fledging.

Conservation status: It is categorized as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The global population is stable, and it remains abundant throughout its range. Its remarkable adaptability to human-altered landscapes, coupled with its willingness to utilize artificial nesting structures, has allowed it to thrive even in the face of ongoing deforestation and agricultural expansion.
