Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by its slender profile and relatively long, rounded tail, this medium-sized passerine bird measures between 17 and 18 centimeters in total length and weighs approximately 22 to 32 grams. It exhibits a mostly olive-brown plumage on its upperparts, which darkens slightly toward the crown. The most prominent diagnostic feature is a broad, highly visible buff-colored supercilium that arches from the bill base over the eye and extends down to the nape, contrasting sharply with a dark postocular stripe. Its throat is pale, ranging from whitish to light cream-yellow, merging into heavily streaked breast and belly regions where buffy-white streaks stand out against an olive-gray background. The bill is robust, wedge-shaped, and slightly upturned at the tip, featuring a pale, flesh-colored or pinkish-gray mandible and strong, dark gray legs designed for agile climbing.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a wide yet fragmented geographic range across South America, showing two main disjunct populations. One population is found along the eastern slopes of the Andes, stretching from southern Peru and western Bolivia to northwestern Argentina (including the provinces of Salta, Jujuy, and Tucumán). The second major population is distributed across eastern and southeastern South America, encompassing southeastern Brazil (from Minas Gerais down to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina (Misiones and Corrientes provinces), occasionally reaching northern Uruguay.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits the dense understory and mid-story of humid montane forests, tropical and subtropical evergreen forests, and the secondary growth of the Atlantic Forest biome. It is frequently associated with bamboo thickets, riverine woodlands, and forest edges that are highly enriched with epiphytic vegetation, such as bromeliads and mosses. Its altitudinal range is remarkably broad, spanning from sea level in coastal Brazil up to 2,800 meters above sea level in the humid Andean cloud forests.

Feeding: Strictly insectivorous, its diet relies heavily on a diverse range of arthropods, such as beetles, moths, spiders, insect larvae, orthopterans, and small ants. It employs its specialized, chisel-like bill to actively probe, pry, and glean through dead leaf curls, bark crevices, mossy branches, and particularly the water-holding leaf axils of epiphytic bromeliads, extracting hidden prey with rapid, precise movements.

Behavior: Typically observed foraging singly or in pairs, it is a key participant in mixed-species flocks moving through the forest canopy and undergrowth. Highly active and acrobatic, it frequently hangs upside down or clings vertically to trunks while searching for food. It is highly vocal, often revealing its presence through a metallic, sharp "tchek" call or a characteristic song consisting of a rapid, descending rattling trill that functions in territory defense and pair-bond maintenance.

Nesting: Utilizes natural cavities in decaying tree trunks, hollow branches, or abandoned woodpecker holes to establish its nest site. The breeding pair lines the deep cavity interior with a cup-shaped structure made of dry leaves, moss, rootlets, and soft plant fibers. The female generally lays a clutch of 2 to 3 white eggs, which are incubated by both parents for approximately 15 days, after which both adults share the duties of feeding and protecting the altricial nestlings.

Conservation status: Classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although local populations face ongoing challenges from habitat fragmentation and deforestation, particularly within the heavily impacted Atlantic Forest region, its extensive overall distribution and ability to colonize mature secondary forests ensure that its global population remains stable and not threatened at a high-risk level.
