It is a medium-sized rabbit with a slender body and long, powerful hind legs that allow it to run at remarkable speed and make sudden changes of direction while escaping predators. Its long, upright ears provide exceptional hearing and also play an important role in regulating body temperature by dissipating excess heat. The large eyes, positioned laterally on the head, provide an extensive field of vision, while the highly sensitive whiskers assist in exploring the surroundings during nighttime or while moving through dense vegetation. The coat is composed of a mixture of gray, brown, buff, and sandy tones, producing highly effective camouflage among dry grasses, rocky soils, and desert shrubs. The underparts are noticeably paler, and the short, rounded tail displays the characteristic white underside that becomes highly visible when the animal flees. Juveniles resemble adults in coloration but generally possess softer, finer fur. Its anatomy reflects outstanding adaptation to terrestrial life in arid environments, combining speed, agility, and the ability to remain perfectly motionless whenever danger is detected.
Geographic Distribution: It is widely distributed throughout the western and southwestern regions of North America, ranging from the southern United States into central Mexico. Within the United States it occurs in California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and portions of southern Oregon and Idaho. Its distribution extends across much of northern and central Mexico, where suitable arid and semi-arid habitats are available. The species is strongly associated with open landscapes characterized by scattered vegetation and generally avoids dense forests and humid environments. Depending on local conditions and habitat quality, it may be found from near sea level to mountainous regions exceeding 2,500 meters in elevation.
Habitat: It primarily occupies deserts, xeric shrublands, dry grasslands, chaparral, arid savannas, rocky slopes, and sparsely vegetated hillsides. It also adapts readily to modified landscapes such as abandoned agricultural fields, pasturelands, roadsides, and other open areas, provided sufficient vegetative cover remains available for concealment. Unlike several other lagomorphs, it rarely excavates its own burrows, instead relying on shallow ground depressions, abandoned burrows created by other animals, or dense shrubs that provide shelter from predators and harsh weather conditions. Shrubby vegetation represents an essential habitat component, offering food resources, protection from predators, and shade during periods of extreme daytime heat.
Diet: It is a generalist herbivore whose diet varies considerably according to season and food availability. It feeds primarily on grasses, herbaceous plants, young shoots, leaves, flowers, and a wide variety of shrubs. During prolonged dry periods it increases its consumption of woody vegetation, bark, cacti, and succulent plants, obtaining much of its required moisture directly from plant tissues and reducing its dependence on free-standing water. Like other rabbits and hares, it practices cecotrophy, re-ingesting specialized soft fecal pellets that contain nutrients produced through microbial fermentation in the digestive tract. This physiological adaptation greatly improves nutrient absorption and allows the species to thrive in environments where food quality is often relatively poor.
Behavior: It is a primarily crepuscular and nocturnal species, although it may also be active during the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are moderate. Most individuals lead solitary lives, occupying home ranges that may overlap with those of neighboring rabbits without forming complex social groups. When threatened, it frequently relies on its excellent camouflage by remaining completely motionless until the danger approaches too closely. If escape becomes necessary, it bursts into a rapid zigzag run that makes pursuit considerably more difficult for predators. Communication occurs mainly through body posture, scent marking, and occasional forceful thumping of the hind feet against the ground, a behavior that may serve as a warning signal to nearby individuals. During the hottest hours of the day it remains concealed beneath shrubs, among rocks, or inside shallow depressions where temperatures are significantly lower than in exposed areas.
Reproduction: Reproductive activity is highly flexible and depends largely on climatic conditions and food availability. In favorable regions breeding may occur during much of the year, whereas in colder or drier areas it is generally concentrated in spring and summer. Following a gestation period of approximately 26 to 30 days, the female gives birth to a litter ranging from one to eight young, although litters of three to five are the most common. Unlike many mammals, newborn rabbits are relatively well developed, being born fully furred, with their eyes open and capable of limited movement shortly after birth. The nest usually consists of a shallow depression lined with grasses and fur plucked from the mother´s body, carefully concealed beneath dense vegetation. The female visits the nest only briefly, usually once or twice each day, to nurse the young, minimizing the risk of attracting predators. Juveniles grow rapidly and become independent within a few weeks, often reaching sexual maturity before their first year when environmental conditions are favorable.
Conservation Status: It is classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as Least Concern because of its extensive geographic distribution, large overall population, and remarkable ecological adaptability. Although the species remains common throughout most of its range, some local populations may be affected by habitat conversion resulting from urban expansion, intensive agriculture, overgrazing, infrastructure development, and increasing habitat fragmentation. Wildfires and prolonged droughts associated with climate change may also alter habitat quality in certain regions. As an abundant herbivore, it represents an important prey species for numerous predators, including raptors, snakes, coyotes, foxes, bobcats, and other carnivorous mammals, making it a key component of food webs across the arid and semi-arid ecosystems of western North America. Maintaining extensive areas of native vegetation and preserving habitat connectivity remain essential for ensuring the long-term stability of its populations.
