Characterized by a striking and sharply defined plumage contrast, this medium-large seabird is easily identifiable in its tropical environments. Adults display a rich, chocolate-brown coloration covering the head, neck, back, and upper breast, which ends abruptly in a clean, horizontal boundary against the pure white of the lower breast, belly, flanks, and underwing coverts. The body length varies from 28 to 31 inches (70 to 80 centimeters), with a wingspan ranging between 53 and 59 inches (135 to 150 centimeters), and a body mass of 2.2 to 4.0 pounds (1000 to 1800 grams), with females being visibly larger and heavier than males. The stout, conical bill is adapted for capturing slippery prey, showing pale shades of yellow or pinkish-flesh, while the webbed feet are a conspicuous yellow-green. Facial skin coloration exhibits sexual dimorphism during the breeding season: males show a distinct bright blue patch around the lores and eyes, whereas females present a vivid chrome yellow facial skin. Juveniles are overall dusky brown, lacking the sharp white contrast of the adults.
Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed across the pantropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. Breeding populations are established throughout the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, coastal islands of South America down to southern Brazil, and the Pacific coast from the Gulf of California to northern Peru. In the Indo-Pacific, it ranges from the tropical coasts of East Africa to the islands of Micronesia, Polynesia, and northern Australia, as well as the coastal waters of Southeast Asia. While mostly sedentary around their nesting islands, some populations engage in extensive post-breeding dispersal into temperate marine zones.
Habitat: Primarily frequents pelagic waters and coastal marine ecosystems, favoring warm-water regions with surface temperatures above 20°C. For nesting and roosting, it is strictly dependent on isolated oceanic islands, coral atolls, offshore rocky cliffs, and sandy cays that are free from terrestrial mammalian predators. Unlike more arboreal sulids, it prefers nesting sites with sparse, low-growing vegetation, grassy patches, or bare rocky ledges, often utilizing flat or gently sloping coastal terraces exposed to prevailing winds to facilitate takeoff.
Feeding: Operating as a highly specialized plunge-diver, this marine predator secures its prey by diving from heights of 30 to 100 feet (10 to 30 meters) above the sea surface. It enters the water at high speeds with its wings folded backward, pursuing prey underwater using its webbed feet and wings for propulsion. Its diet consists predominantly of flying fish of the family Exocoetidae, squid, halfbeaks, anchovies, and other small shoaling pelagic fish. It frequently participates in multi-species foraging flocks, often associating with large marine predators like tuna and dolphins that drive schools of small fish to the surface.
Behavior: Highly gregarious in nature, it establishes dense breeding colonies that can number thousands of individuals. Its flight is strong and direct, characterized by several deep wingbeats interspersed with long, low glides close to the water surface. On land, its gait is clumsy due to its posteriorly positioned legs, yet it is highly agile in the air. The species is a frequent target of kleptoparasitism by magnificent frigatebirds, which harass them in flight until they regurgitate their catch. Males defend their small nesting territories aggressively through harsh vocalizations and stereotypical displays such as sky-pointing.
Nesting: Breeding occurs throughout the year in many equatorial areas, though it is highly seasonal in subtropical regions. It constructs a rudimentary scrape-nest directly on the ground, sparsely lined with twigs, dry grass, seaweed, pebbles, and shells. The clutch typically consists of two pale blue eggs covered with a chalky layer, which are incubated for 40 to 43 days by both parents. Lacking a brood patch, parents incubate the eggs by placing their highly vascularized webbed feet directly over them. Although both eggs frequently hatch a few days apart, obligate siblicide (or cainism) is nearly universal; the older, stronger chick attacks and ejects the younger sibling from the nest, leading to its death by starvation or predation, resulting in only one fledgling reared per season.
Conservation status: Categorized as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List due to its extremely large global range and substantial overall population. However, localized populations face severe threats from habitat degradation, the introduction of invasive predators (such as rats, feral cats, and pigs) that destroy nests and prey on chicks, disturbance from coastal development, marine plastic pollution, and the depletion of local fish stocks due to commercial overfishing.
