Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized as a medium-sized passerine bird measuring approximately 15 to 16 centimeters in total length. This tyrant flycatcher exhibits a predominantly ash-grey plumage on its upperparts, with a slightly darker crown. The coloration of its underparts varies geographically: the nominate subspecies features a dull white belly, whereas other populations present a pale yellow wash on the abdomen. The throat and chest are a soft light grey, gradually blending into the lower belly. Its wings are dark brown to blackish, highlighted by two prominent whitish wingbars and pale margins on the secondary feathers. The bill is black, short, and straight, well-suited for capturing agile insect prey, and its dark eyes are set within a subtle, faint orbital ring.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the central and southern regions of South America. Its geographic range encompasses extensive areas of Brazil (particularly in the northeast, central-west, and southern regions), the entirety of Paraguay, northern and central Argentina (reaching as far south as northern Patagonia), most of Uruguay, and eastern Bolivia. While it is largely a resident species throughout its range, populations inhabiting the extreme southern limits of its distribution are known to undergo partial migratory movements northward during the austral winter.

Habitat: Primarily frequents open, semi-arid, and scrubby biomes. It is a highly representative species of the dry Chaco, the Cerrado savannas, the Caatinga dry forest, and the Argentine Espinal, as well as open woodlands and pastures with scattered trees. It strictly avoids the interior of dense, humid tropical rainforests, preferring xerophytic shrublands, deciduous forest edges, and degraded agricultural or suburban areas with remaining mature trees.

Feeding: Maintains an strictly insectivorous diet, feeding on a diverse array of terrestrial and aerial arthropods, including beetles, flies, wasps, ants, and caterpillars. It employs active hunting techniques, frequently sallying from exposed perches to capture prey in mid-air (flycatcher style) or gleaning insects directly from foliage, bark, and outer branches. During periods of low insect abundance, it may supplement its diet with small fleshy fruits and berries.

Behavior: Renowned for its highly active and vocal nature. It is typically observed in pairs or small family groups foraging conspicuously through the mid and upper canopy. A distinctive behavioral trait is its complex duetting and courtship display, wherein pairs face each other, perform energetic wing-shivering movements, and emit loud, synchronized squeaky vocalizations. Its call is a series of harsh, raspy notes that make the species easily detectable even when hidden.

Nesting: Constructs a small, compact, cup-shaped nest, typically placed in the fork of a horizontal or vertical branch, generally at a height of 2 to 5 meters above the ground. The nest is woven from fine plant fibers, rootlets, lichens, and bound together with spider silk, which provides structural integrity and serves as excellent camouflage against the tree bark. The clutch typically consists of 2 to 3 eggs, which are creamy white and speckled with brown or reddish-brown markings clustered at the larger end. Incubation lasts between 14 to 15 days, with both parents actively participating in incubating and provisioning the nestlings.

Conservation status: Evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This classification is justified by its vast geographical range, stable population trend, and its high adaptability to modified landscapes, which allows it to colonize secondary woodlands and suburban parks.
