Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is a medium-sized bird of prey measuring between 35 and 40 centimeters in length and weighing approximately 350 to 450 grams. It is distinguished by its uniform sooty-black to dark brownish plumage, which is extensively barred with fine, wavy white lines across the entire head, mantle, underparts, and back. The facial disc is dark and obscure, lacking prominent borders but showing faint white concentric markings. It lacks ear tufts, giving the head a rounded appearance. The eyes are a deep dark brown or blackish color, creating a striking contrast with its bright orange-yellow bill and similarly colored bare toes and talons. The wings are rounded, and the moderately long tail displays four to five distinct white transverse bands.

Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed across the Neotropics of South America. Its geographic range extends from eastern Colombia, Venezuela, and the Guianas, southward through the Amazon basin of Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and virtually all of Brazil. It also reaches more southern latitudes, including eastern Paraguay and northern Argentina, specifically in the provinces of Misiones and Salta. Despite its expansive range, it is generally considered uncommon and occurs in low population densities throughout its distribution.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits humid tropical and subtropical lowland forests, although it can be found at elevations up to 1400 meters above sea level. It shows a strong preference for dense, primary terra firme forests, flooded forests (várzeas), and the wet Atlantic forest. Nevertheless, the species displays some tolerance to habitat alteration, occasionally occurring in mature secondary forests, dense plantations, and forest edges, provided there are large, mature trees available for roosting and breeding.

Feeding: It is a strictly nocturnal, opportunistic carnivore with a diverse diet. Its primary prey consists of large nocturnal insects such as beetles (Coleoptera), mantises, grasshoppers (Orthoptera), and large moths. It also preys upon small vertebrates, including forest rodents, roosting or flying bats, small passerine birds sleeping in the canopy, and occasionally tree-climbing reptiles and amphibians.

Behavior: It is a highly nocturnal and crepuscular raptor. During the day, it roosts solitarily in dense foliage close to the trunk of tall trees, where its dark, barred plumage provides excellent camouflage. It becomes active at dusk, establishing its territory through vocalizations. The song is a distinctive series of deep, guttural, rhythmic hoots, usually ending with a sharper, louder note. It hunts from elevated perches, scanning the forest floor and understory before descending in silent flight, made possible by its specialized, sound-muffling feather edges.

Nesting: Information regarding its reproductive biology remains limited due to its elusive nature. It typically nests in natural tree cavities, hollows in decaying trunks, or large fork branches high above the forest floor. It may also occasionally adopt abandoned stick nests of other large birds. The female lays a clutch of one to two white eggs, which she incubates for about 30 days while the male hunts and provides food. Once hatched, the altricial chicks are cared for by both parents, eventually leaving the nest to climb nearby branches before they are fully capable of flight.

Conservation status: It is currently assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its extensive range prevents it from being classified under a higher threat category, local populations are increasingly threatened by deforestation, habitat fragmentation, forest fires, and the logging of old-growth trees, which deprives the species of essential nesting hollows and daytime roosts.
