Description

Representing a highly specialized group of nectar-feeding birds, this species is immediately distinguished by its remarkable cephalic ornamentation. Adult males of this taxon exhibit a long, erect crest of brilliant violet-blue or metallic purple coloration, which ends in subtle dark and white tips. Their upperparts are predominantly a glistening bronzy-green, while the underparts show a contrasting pale grey tone accented by a prominent purplish-blue patch on the center of the breast. Females of Stephanoxis loddigesii, conversely, lack the elongated crest and possess entirely greyish-white underparts. The species features a straight, slender black bill highly adapted for extracting nectar, with an average body length of 8.5 to 9.5 centimeters and a weight of approximately 4 grams.

Geographical distribution: This bird is restricted to the subtropical and temperate zones of central-southern South America. Its distribution range encompasses southeastern and southern Brazil (from São Paulo state southwards to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, and the extreme northeastern Argentina, specifically within the Misiones province. It is largely a resident species, showing no long-distance migratory patterns, though minor seasonal altitudinal movements may occur in search of blooming plants.

Habitat: It primarily frequents the understory and borders of the humid Atlantic Forest biome, as well as secondary regenerating forests, woodland borders, dense shrublands, and semi-open forest clearings. It is also commonly found in suburban parks, plantations, and domestic gardens that offer a high density of flowering ornamental plants, ranging altitudinally from sea level up to approximately 1500 meters above sea level, favoring humid microclimates with dense understory vegetation.

Feeding: Its diet is highly specialized, consisting of nectar and small invertebrates. It feeds on nectar from a wide variety of native plants, particularly from families such as Bromeliaceae, Myrtaceae, Rubiaceae, and Malvaceae, acting as an essential pollinator within its ecosystem. To fulfill its protein requirements, it actively captures tiny insects and spiders on the wing through agile aerial hawking maneuvers or by gleaning them directly from leaf surfaces.

Behavior: Displaying a highly territorial nature, males aggressively defend rich floral resources from competing hummingbirds and other nectarivores. During the breeding season, males of Stephanoxis loddigesii form communal display arenas known as leks. In these specific sites, they gather to sing persistent, high-pitched songs while raising and fanning their striking violet-blue crest to attract visiting females. Its flight is exceptionally agile, characterized by rapid wingbeats that allow it to hover stationary before flowers with extreme precision.

Nesting: All duties related to nest construction and offspring care are performed solely by the female. She builds a tiny, compact cup-shaped nest using soft plant fibers, moss, and lichens, tightly bound together with sticky spider silk, which allows the nest to expand as the chicks grow. The nest is typically secured to a fork in a low-hanging branch close to the ground. The clutch consists of two small white eggs incubated by the female for about 14 to 16 days. Once hatched, the nestlings are fed via regurgitation and fledge after approximately three weeks.

Conservation status: It is currently categorized as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although it remains locally common, its populations face continuous pressure from the extensive deforestation and fragmentation of the Atlantic Forest due to agricultural expansion, logging, and urban development, emphasizing the need for regional habitat preservation.
