This is a large-sized Neotropical praying mantis characterized by its slender, highly specialized, and robust morphology. Adult females of the species Stagmatoptera hyaloptera exhibit a substantial build and reach body lengths of 70 to 80 millimeters, significantly outsizing the males, which measure between 55 and 65 millimeters with a much more graceful and lightweight frame. Their dominant body coloration is a vibrant leaf green or yellowish-green, providing exceptional camouflage against natural foliage. A definitive diagnostic feature is the presence of a well-defined yellowish or whitish pterostigma on the forewings (tegmina). The hindwings of females are mostly hyaline or transparent—a characteristic that inspires the specific epithet—whereas males possess fully functional wings developed for sustained flight. The pronotum is elongated, featuring finely denticulated margins in females, and the raptorial forelegs are equipped with sharp spines designed to firmly secure struggling prey.
This insect features an elongated body shape perfectly adapted to arboreal life, where its green coloration serves as a primary cryptic defense mechanism. Its highly mobile, triangular head features large, prominent compound eyes that afford the mantis exceptional binocular and three-dimensional vision. The thorax is distinguished by a remarkably elongated and flexible prothorax, allowing for a wide range of strike motion. The forelegs of Stagmatoptera hyaloptera are raptorial, armed with a series of sharp, asymmetrical femoro-tibial spines that function as an instantaneous, lethal clamp for any prey animal crossing its striking range.
Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed throughout the Neotropical region of South America. Established populations are regularly documented in Brazil (especially within the Cerrado, Atlantic Forest, and transitional areas of the Pantanal), as well as in the warm, humid regions of Paraguay, eastern Bolivia, and northern Argentina. Its geographical range spans from low-lying plains up to premontane zones at altitudes around 1,200 meters.
Habitat: This species primarily inhabits wooded savanna biomes, gallery forests, tropical forest edges, and seasonal wetlands. It shows a clear microenvironmental preference for the middle and upper canopy of vegetation, colonizing dense shrubs, lower tree crowns, and perennial agricultural crops. It is an adaptable taxon capable of colonizing disturbed environments, frequently appearing in urban residential gardens and peri-urban orchards that offer sufficient foliage cover.
Feeding: Operating as a highly efficient, generalist ambush predator, its dietary habits are exclusively carnivorous. Its diet consists mainly of a wide variety of active invertebrates, such as orthopterans (grasshoppers and crickets), lepidopterans (nocturnal moths and butterflies), dipterans, and hymenopterans. Due to the sheer physical strength and size of mature females, they can occasionally capture small vertebrates, including tree frogs and small lizards, utilizing the crushing force of their raptorial forelegs to immediately subdue them.
Behavior: This is a solitary insect with mostly diurnal habits, whereas adult males increase their activity during nocturnal hours to optimize their search for receptive females, being frequently attracted to artificial light sources. It spends most of its time motionless in a dynamic ambush stance, mimicking leaf structures. When cornered by a potential predator, the species displays a highly conspicuous deimatic behavior: it flares its wings suddenly to appear larger, exposes the transparent hindwings, and raises its forelegs in a strike-ready pose to intimidate the threat.
Reproduction: The reproductive cycle begins with an extremely cautious and slow approach by the male, who must avoid triggering the female´s predatory instinct to escape sexual cannibalism. After a prolonged copulation period, the fertilized female proceeds to deposit her eggs by secreting a frothy substance that she shapes with her ovipositor valves to form an ootheca. This protective structure is firmly glued to sturdy twigs or dry wooden surfaces; the foam quickly hardens upon contact with the air, acquiring a parchment-like texture and a light brown coloration. The ootheca effectively insulates the eggs against desiccation, parasites, and harsh weather conditions until dozens of nymphs emerge, undergoing incomplete metamorphosis (hemimetabolous development).
Conservation status: This species is not currently listed under any threat category on the IUCN Red List (Not Evaluated - NE). However, at local levels, populations of Stagmatoptera hyaloptera experience fluctuations caused by the persistent degradation of natural habitats like the Cerrado, driven by deforestation and intensive agricultural expansion.
