Current situation: Considered a color variation of the Black-throated Grassquit (Sporophila ruficollis) (Areta et al., 2010). It is similar to the Black-throated Grassquit (Sporophila ruficollis) except that it has a black collar instead of just the throat and chest, has the same vocalization, and uses the same habitat (Areta et al., 2010; pers. obs.).

Description: Ash-colored crown, black collar, black wings with a white band, black tail; back, rump, and ventral areas are cinnamon.
