Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Is a small and highly energetic passerine bird characterized by a striking sexual dimorphism. Adult males display a conspicuous and complete black hood that covers the entire head, throat, and upper breast. This dark coloration contrasts sharply with their bright yellow underparts, olive-green back, and yellow rump. Their wings and tail are mostly black, adorned with a prominent yellow wing bar that is highly visible during flight and when perched. Females, on the other hand, lack the dark hood, presenting a much more understated and cryptic plumage dominated by pale olive-gray tones above and whitish or pale yellow below. They measure approximately 4.3 to 5.1 inches (11 to 13 centimeters) in length and weigh between 11 and 14 grams. They possess a short, conical, and sharp beak, perfectly adapted for extracting and husking small seeds.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across South America, occupying a vast and diverse geographic range. This species is found from the highlands of Colombia and Venezuela, extending south along the Andean chain through Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. It also populates extensive areas of Brazil (particularly the central and southern regions), Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina, reaching as far south as northern Patagonia. Due to this extensive distribution and the geographical barriers within its range, multiple subspecies have been recognized, each adapted to local environmental conditions.

Habitat: Inhabits an impressive variety of ecosystems, ranging from coastal sea-level plains up to high-altitude Andean shrublands exceeding 13,000 feet (4,000 meters) in elevation. It is commonly found in open woodlands, scrubby savannas, grasslands, agricultural fields, orchards, urban parks, and domestic gardens. It displays a remarkable tolerance to human-altered landscapes, frequently visiting suburban areas and city green spaces, provided there are sufficient trees, ornamental conifers, or dense shrubbery for shelter and nesting.

Feeding: Is primarily granivorous, focusing its diet on a wide variety of herbaceous plant seeds. It shows a strong preference for seeds from the Asteraceae family (such as thistles and dandelions), as well as grasses and brassicas. It frequently feeds on the seed heads of wild herbs and weeds, using its agile body to access hard-to-reach food. During the breeding season, it supplements this plant-based diet with small insects and larvae to provide the essential proteins required for the rapid development of its nestlings.

Behavior: Exhibits highly gregarious tendencies, especially outside of the breeding season when individuals gather in large, active flocks that occasionally mix with other finch species. Its flight is fast, strong, and characteristically undulating. It is an extremely active and acrobatic feeder, often hanging completely upside down from seed heads or thin branches to forage. The males are renowned for their complex, melodious, and continuous song, which consists of rapid trills, whistles, and the mimicry of other sympatric bird species.

Nesting: Breeding occurs mainly during the spring and summer months, though the exact timing varies by latitude. The female builds a small, compact, cup-shaped nest using delicate rootlets, dry grass, moss, and lichens, binding them together with spiderwebs. The interior is lined with soft materials like animal hair and plant down. The nest is typically hidden at medium to high levels in the fork of a branch within dense trees or shrubs. The clutch consists of 3 to 5 pale blue-white eggs, which may sometimes feature fine reddish-brown speckles. Incubation is carried out solely by the female for about 12 to 13 days, during which she is fed by the male. Both parents actively participate in feeding the chicks, which fledge after approximately two weeks.

Conservation status: Is currently evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. This classification is supported by its incredibly large distribution range and a population size that appears to be stable. While it is one of the most frequently captured songbirds for the illegal cage-bird trade due to its beautiful plumage and singing abilities, these pressures have not caused significant regional declines that would threaten the species´ overall survival, although local monitoring remains crucial.
