Description


Characterized by its small size, this passerine measures approximately 12 to 13 centimeters in total length. The species displays distinct sexual dimorphism. The adult male features a prominent black crown and a conspicuous black bib on the throat, which contrast sharply with its olive-green upperparts streaked with dark brown. Its underparts, particularly the breast and belly, are a bright, vivid yellow, complemented by prominent yellow wing bars on its dark flight feathers. Conversely, the female lacks the black crown and bib entirely, displaying a much more subdued coloration dominated by greyish-olive tones on the back and a pale, yellowish-white belly with faint streaking. The bill is short, conical, and greyish, ideal for seed extraction.

Geographical distribution: Endemic to the southern cone of South America, this bird is widely distributed across Chile and Argentina. In Chile, its range extends from the Atacama Region all the way south to the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. In Argentina, it is found along the forested eastern slopes of the Andes, spanning from Neuquén Province down to the southernmost continental tip, as well as on the Falkland Islands, where it has established breeding populations. Some southern populations engage in seasonal latitudinal and altitudinal migrations to escape harsh winter weather.

Habitat: Shows a strong preference for temperate Nothofagus forests, particularly those composed of southern beech trees. It is also commonly found in dense shrublands, forest edges, clearings, and riverine woodlands. This adaptable species has successfully colonized human-modified environments, including suburban gardens, public parks, and agricultural fields with windbreaks or orchards, ranging from sea level up to elevations of 1500 meters in the Andean foothills.

Feeding: Primarily granivorous, relying on a wide variety of seeds as its main food source. It actively forages across all forest strata, from the high canopy to the ground. Its diet includes the seeds of native trees like Nothofagus and Araucaria araucana, alongside seeds from herbaceous plants and weeds, particularly those in the Asteraceae family. During the breeding season, it opportunistically consumes small invertebrates, caterpillars, and aphids, which provide vital proteins for growing nestlings.

Behavior: Highly energetic and gregarious outside the breeding season, often forming active flocks that can number dozens of individuals. These flocks move in a synchronized, undulating flight pattern and can be seen acrobatically hanging upside down from seed heads to feed. The male is known for its melodious and complex song, which consists of a rapid succession of sweet whistles, buzzy notes, and trills, typically delivered from an exposed perch to defend its territory or attract mates.

Nesting: Breeding occurs mostly between September and February. The female builds a compact, cup-shaped nest using fine twigs, mosses, lichens, and grass, lining the interior chamber with soft animal hair and feathers to maintain warmth. The nest is typically hidden in the fork of a dense bush or the lower branches of a tree. The female lays a clutch of 3 to 5 pale blue or white eggs, which are sparsely speckled with reddish-brown spots. Incubation lasts between 12 and 14 days and is performed solely by the female, while the male regularly feeds her during this period.

Conservation status: Classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although localized habitat degradation due to logging and agricultural expansion affects some areas, its overall population remains large and stable. Its high ecological plasticity allows it to adapt easily to urbanized landscapes, ensuring its survival across its natural distribution range.
