This is a relatively small species of dabbling duck belonging to the family Anatidae, exhibiting distinct sexual dimorphism during the breeding season. Breeding males are characterized by a striking slate-blue head adorned with a prominent white crescent on the face between the bill and the eye. The rest of the body is predominantly light brown speckled with dark spots, and a white patch is visible on the rear flank. Females and non-breeding birds (eclipse plumage) are much duller, displaying a cryptic mottled brown plumage that provides excellent camouflage. The most diagnostic feature of both sexes, easily observed during flight, is the large sky-blue patch on the forewing, bordered by a narrow white bar and a shimmering green speculum. The bill is medium-sized, flattened, and black, while the legs and feet are a dull yellowish-orange. The species measures between 14 and 16 inches (36 to 41 centimeters) in length, has a wingspan of 22 to 24 inches (56 to 62 centimeters), and weighs approximately 10 to 18 ounces (280 to 500 grams).
Geographical distribution: This waterfowl has a vast geographical range across the Americas. Its breeding grounds are situated in the temperate and northern regions of North America, spanning widely across Canada and the northern and central portions of the United States. As a highly migratory species, it departs its breeding grounds early in the autumn. The wintering range is extensive, stretching from the southern United States (specifically Texas and Louisiana), through Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, down to northern South America, reaching as far south as Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and northern Peru.
Habitat: It primarily frequents shallow, calm freshwater environments. During the nesting season, it favors prairie potholes, shallow marshes, ponds, lakeshores, and slow-moving rivers with abundant emergent vegetation. On migration and during the winter months, its habitat preferences expand to include brackish marshes, coastal lagoons, estuaries, mangrove swamps, flooded agricultural fields, and shallow reservoirs, where it can easily access food close to the water´s surface.
Feeding: It is an opportunistic omnivore that adapts its diet based on the seasonal availability of food resources. A significant portion of its diet consists of plant matter, including aquatic plant seeds, pondweeds, duckweed, and algae. During the breeding season, it increases its intake of animal protein, feeding on a wide variety of aquatic invertebrates, such as snails, beetles, midge larvae, small crustaceans, and mollusks. It feeds by dabbling—filtering organic matter and tiny organisms from the surface water or tipping forward to reach submerged food without diving.
Behavior: It is recognized as one of the earliest migratory ducks in North America, often starting its southward journey before the end of summer. Known for its rapid and agile flight, this duck typically travels in compact, fast-moving flocks that twist and turn in unison. It is highly social, frequently associating with other waterfowl species of the genera Spatula and Anas. Social behavior includes elaborate courtship displays where males perform head-pumping motions and emit high-pitched whistles to gain the attention of females.
Nesting: Breeding begins in late spring upon arrival at the northern nesting grounds. The female selects a well-concealed site on dry ground, usually within dense tallgrass prairies or thick herbaceous vegetation, often situated within 100 yards of water. She constructs a scrape on the ground, lining it with dry grass and soft down feathers plucked from her breast. The clutch consists of 6 to 14 creamy-white eggs. Incubation is performed solely by the female and lasts for 19 to 23 days. The ducklings are highly precocial, leaving the nest within a day of hatching to follow the mother to water, where they immediately begin foraging independently.
Conservation status: The species is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. While overall populations remain large and stable, localized threats persist, including the drainage of vital prairie pothole wetlands for agriculture, habitat degradation due to pollution, and the potential impacts of climate change on northern breeding habitats.
