Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is a small, cryptic member of the Furnariidae family, measuring approximately 4.7 to 5.1 inches (12 to 13 centimeters) in length and weighing around 10 to 13 grams. It features a grayish-brown upperparts plumage that is heavily streaked with black and buff, providing excellent camouflage within its grassy environment. Its most diagnostic feature is a distinct rufous or bay cap that contrasts sharply with a pale supercilium and a dark eye-line. The underparts are mostly whitish to pale gray, showing a delicate buff wash on the flanks. Its tail is notably long, graduated, and decomposed, ending in pointed feathers that help it balance while climbing vertical stalks. The bill is relatively straight, colored light horn with a darker tip, adapted for probing dense vegetation.

Geographical distribution: It is endemic to the Southern Cone of South America, with a distribution primarily restricted to the temperate zones of east-central Argentina (ranging from southern Entre Ríos and Santa Fe to southern Buenos Aires province), throughout Uruguay, and locally in extreme southern Brazil, specifically in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Its distribution is highly fragmented due to its extreme habitat specialization.

Habitat: It is strictly associated with temperate marshes, wetlands, and seasonally flooded grasslands locally known as espartillares. It colonizes areas dominated by tall, dense bunchgrasses, particularly from the genera Spartina and Cortaderia. The species prefers ecotones between permanent marshes and dry uplands, where the soil remains moist or temporarily waterlogged, completely avoiding forested areas and heavily grazed pastures that lack dense, tall vegetation cover.

Feeding: Its diet is strictly insectivorous, consisting of a wide variety of small arthropods, beetles, insect larvae, spiders, and ants. It searches for prey by meticulously gleaning the leaf litter accumulated at the base of grass clumps and scanning the lower stems of plants. Using its pointed bill to extract hidden insects from plant crevices, it rarely feeds in the open and almost never catches prey in flight, preferring to forage close to the ground.

Behavior: It exhibits highly secretive, elusive, and terrestrial habits, often running through dense vegetation in a mouse-like fashion rather than flying. When flushed, it performs only short, low, jerky flights before plunging back into the grass. It is a territorial and monogamous species that is more easily detected by its song—a rapid, high-pitched, accelerating trill—than by sight, as it remains hidden at the slightest sign of danger.

Nesting: The breeding season takes place from October to January. It constructs a closed, globular, or oval-shaped nest, woven with dry grass leaves and securely attached low to the ground, usually under 20 inches (50 centimeters) high, inside a dense clump of Spartina or other tall grasses. The inner cup is lined with soft plant down and animal hair. The female lays a clutch of 3 to 4 pure white eggs, which are incubated by both parents for about 14 to 15 days. The altricial chicks are cooperatively fed by both adults with small invertebrates until they fledge.

Conservation status: It is classified as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List. The primary threats facing this specialized bird are the loss, degradation, and severe fragmentation of its natural habitat caused by agricultural expansion, wetland drainage for urban development, and the frequent burning of tall grasslands to promote livestock grazing.
