Description


Belongs to a group of small hemipteran insects commonly referred to as sharpshooters or leafhoppers, characterized by their remarkable agility and their close relationship with the vegetation on which they depend.

Characterized by a slender, elongated body shape, with an average length ranging between 5 and 6.5 millimeters. The general coloration of this insect is predominantly yellowish-green or bright green, highlighted by a distinctive pattern of dark lines and spots on its dorsal surface. The head features a prominent, rounded crown displaying characteristic black spots located at the apex and near the compound eyes, which typically exhibit dark or reddish hues. Its pronotum is smooth, slightly convex, and may present faint or dark transverse bands. The forewings (forewing hemelytra) are subtransparent or translucent, often with well-defined veins in shades of green or yellow, completely covering the abdomen when the insect is at rest. The hind legs are highly specialized for jumping, equipped with numerous spines arranged in longitudinal rows along the tibia, a key anatomical feature essential for identifying members of the Cicadellidae family.

Geographical distribution: Widely distributed throughout the Neotropical region, spanning several countries across South America. Its presence is well-documented in Brazil (particularly in the southern and southeastern regions), Argentina (northern and central provinces), Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, and specific areas of Colombia and Ecuador. Thanks to its adaptability to diverse plant hosts, its populations show a remarkable geographical continuity along river basins and agricultural zones across the subcontinent.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits open areas, including temperate grasslands, tropical savannas, humid forest edges, and a wide variety of agroecosystems. It is highly common to find this species in citrus orchards, coffee plantations, alfalfa fields, and livestock pastures. It prefers herbaceous and shrubby strata where relative humidity is moderate to high and where there is an abundant availability of young plants with tender tissues suitable for feeding and colonization.

Feeding: An obligate phytophagous insect specialized in xylem sap-feeding. It utilizes its piercing-sucking mouthparts (stylets) to penetrate the vascular tissues of a wide range of host plants, including both monocots and dicots. Because xylem fluid is nutritionally poor and highly diluted, the insect must process and excrete large volumes of clear liquid, a phenomenon often referred to as "honeydew rain." It is a recognized and potential biological vector of the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, a pathogen responsible for devastating agricultural diseases such as Citrus Variegated Chlorosis (CVC), which makes it a highly significant economic pest.

Behavior: Renowned for its high mobility and its ability to execute rapid, long-distance jumps when detecting threats, often coordinating this escape with short, erratic flights. It exhibits predominantly diurnal habits, showing peak activity during the warmest hours of the day when it moves actively through the foliage. For intraspecific communication, particularly during courtship, it relies on low-frequency vibrational signals transmitted through the plant substrate; these vibrations are imperceptible to human hearing but crucial for mate localization and pair-formation.

Reproduction: Oviparous and undergoes a simple metamorphosis or paurometabolous development. Following successful mating facilitated by vibrational acoustic communication, the female utilizes her saw-like ovipositor to make tiny incisions in leaf tissue or tender plant stems. The eggs are deposited endophytically, typically in small clusters or individually, protecting them from desiccation and potential predators. Emerging nymphs pass through five distinct nymphal instars, during which they lack functional wings but possess the ability to jump and feed on sap. The complete life cycle from egg to adult varies in duration, depending heavily on ambient temperatures and the nutritional quality of the host plant.

Conservation status: Has not been formally evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and therefore lacks a listing on the Red List. Due to its extensive geographical distribution, high local abundance, and association with disturbed and agricultural habitats, it is not considered to be under any threat of extinction. Conversely, within agronomic contexts, it is frequently the subject of monitoring and integrated pest management programs due to its role as a vector of plant pathogens.
