Description


This is a highly distinctive arachnid taxon characterized by a prominent, dome-shaped globose cephalothorax that is significantly larger and higher than its abdomen. This specialized morphological configuration houses highly developed glands capable of synthesizing and storing a unique mixture of adhesive silk and venom. It features an exquisite and striking color pattern consisting of a pale yellow to orange-yellow base coat, adorned with an intricate, symmetrical arrangement of dark brown or black stripes and spots resembling a feline´s coat. The legs are remarkably long, slender, and fragile, marked by alternating dark and light rings. Unlike most spiders, this species possesses only six eyes arranged in three distinct pairs or dyads. Adult males measure between 3 and 7 millimeters in body length, whereas the larger females range from 7 to 12 millimeters, excluding the long walking legs which can easily double or triple their apparent size.

Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed across the western and southern regions of South America. It is exceptionally abundant in Chile, spanning from the arid northern boundaries of Arica and Parinacota down to the temperate, humid territories of the Aisén region. Furthermore, established populations are well-documented across multiple provinces in Argentina, coastal and inter-Andean valleys of Peru, transition zones in Bolivia, and southern territories of both Uruguay and Brazil, demonstrating a versatile ecological adaptation throughout the Neotropical realm.

Habitat: It displays a strong synanthropic tendency, successfully colonizing human-dominated landscapes. It is frequently encountered inside residential homes, warehouses, offices, and rural outbuildings, where it occupies dark, undisturbed microhabitats such as wall crevices, spaces behind hanging picture frames, unused furniture, and closets. In natural, non-urban environments, it can be found sheltering under the bark of decaying logs, beneath flat rocks, within leaf litter, and inside sclerophyllous woodlands or semi-arid scrublands that shield it from intense solar radiation and larger predators.

Feeding: Functioning as a highly specialized carnivorous predator, this arachnid plays a vital ecological role in controlling domestic insect populations. Its prey spectrum consists of various small arthropods, including flies, mosquitoes, moths, silverfish, and other spiders. It is highly renowned as the primary natural predator of Loxosceles laeta, the dangerously venomous Chilean recluse spider. Its hunting strategy does not rely on constructing traditional capture webs; instead, it stalks its prey slowly and immobilizes it using an extraordinary spitting mechanism that projects a sticky, constricting substance over a distance.

Behavior: It exhibits strictly nocturnal activity patterns and moves with a slow, deliberate, and cautious gait, which helps it evade detection by both potential prey and predators. Since it lacks the speed of active cursorial spiders, it has evolved a highly sophisticated defense and hunting mechanism: when it detects prey at a distance of 1 to 2 centimeters, it rapidly contracts its prosoma to eject two zigzagging streams of sticky glue combined with venom from its chelicerae. This entire ballistic spitting sequence takes less than 1/700 of a second, instantly pinning the victim to the substrate as the liquid solidifies upon contact with the air. The spider then approaches safely to deliver a lethal bite, injecting digestive enzymes to liquefy and consume the prey´s internal tissues.

Reproduction: The reproductive cycle of this species involves complex courtship rituals designed to minimize the risk of sexual cannibalism by the larger female. The male initiates a highly cautious approach, generating rhythmic, species-specific vibrations with his legs against the substrate to signal his non-prey status. Following successful copulation, the female deposits her eggs and wraps them in a loose, spherical silk sac. Uniquely, the mother carries this egg sac constantly in her chelicerae and pedipalps, protecting it from potential predators and environmental hazards while severely restricting her own feeding activities until the spiderlings hatch. After hatching, the post-embryonic offspring remain close to the mother for a brief period before dispersing.

Conservation status: At present, this species has not been formally evaluated under the IUCN Red List criteria, and is generally considered of Least Concern or Not Evaluated within regional biodiversity catalogs. Due to its remarkable ability to thrive in human dwellings and its vast geographical distribution, its population dynamics remain highly stable, facing no imminent threats or conservation concerns.
