Description

This is a medium-sized, ground-dwelling passerine bird that measures between 18 and 20 centimeters in total length and weighs approximately 30 to 38 grams. Its plumage is highly cryptic, dominated by dark rufous-brown upperparts, which contrast sharply with a bright, rich rufous-orange chest. The throat and chin are noticeably pale, displaying a whitish to buffy coloration. It features a short, stiff, blackish tail with specialized, rigid feather shafts that assist in balancing against vertical surfaces. The bill is remarkably long, slender, and slightly decurved, with a dark upper mandible and a flesh-colored base on the lower mandible, perfectly adapted for probing into the forest floor.

Geographical distribution: It is strictly endemic to the Atlantic Forest biome of South America. Its range extends across eastern and southeastern Brazil (from the isolated populations in Ceará and Bahia southwards to Rio Grande do Sul), reaching eastern Paraguay and the northeastern corner of Argentina, primarily in the Misiones province. Two distinct subspecies of Sclerurus scansor are recognized: the nominate race occupying the southern portion of the range, and a smaller, disjunct subspecies restricted to the dry forest refuges of northeastern Brazil.

Habitat: It is restricted to the dark understory of humid subtropical and tropical forests, primary evergreen forests, and mature secondary woodlands. It exhibits an obligate dependency on undisturbed forest floors covered with a thick, moist layer of leaf litter, often near shaded creeks, steep ravines, or humid slopes. This species is rarely observed in open areas or highly fragmented woodlots, generally occurring from sea level up to elevations of 1500 meters above sea level, where canopy cover remains dense.

Feeding: Its diet consists entirely of small invertebrates found within the soil and decaying organic matter. It is an active ground-forager, using its strong bill to systematically and noisily toss leaves aside, a highly characteristic foraging technique. It preys upon a wide variety of beetles, ants, spiders, insect larvae, earthworms, and centipedes that thrive underneath the damp leaf litter.

Behavior: This highly terrestrial bird is notoriously shy, secretive, and typically found singly or in pairs. It walks deliberately on the forest floor, holding its body horizontally and occasionally cocking and shaking its tail. When startled, it prefers to run swiftly into the dense undergrowth rather than take flight, only performing short, low-altitude flights when cornered. It is most easily detected by the distinctive rustling sound of dry leaves being swept aside or by its loud, metallic, descending song, which consists of a rapid series of high-pitched whistles.

Nesting: It breeds in subterranean cavities, excavating its own tunnels in vertical dirt banks, naturally occurring ravines, or the root dirt-balls of uprooted fallen trees. These tunnels can extend from 50 to 100 centimeters deep into the soil, ending in a rounded nesting chamber lined with dry leaf skeletons and small twigs. The female typically lays a clutch of two pristine white eggs, which are incubated by both parents, who also share the responsibility of feeding the nestlings with soft-bodied invertebrates.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. However, its global population is estimated to be declining due to the continuous destruction, fragmentation, and degradation of the Atlantic Forest ecosystem, which is heavily threatened by agricultural expansion, logging, and infrastructure development.
